He could feel her warm breath on his palm as she spoke with Fish through his communicator, her hand gripping his forearm almost burning him through his flight jacket. She was close enough to smell the blaster emissions wafting off her, the sharp, citrus scent of the steam bath clinging to her skin. His fingertips were millimeters from her cheek and he wanted to cup her face in his hand and drag her around to look at him with those bright eyes. He wanted to play with the flyaway bit of hair that had missed her ponytail and brush his thumb over her lips until they parted. What was wrong with him? Always Get In a Spaceship With a Scoundrel, a sci-fi romance by Ellie Rhymer As the table once again devolved into accusations and cross-talk, Anora’s head was swimming, disoriented by the overlapping conversation, even as she had the sense that these were well-trod arguments and ancient histories. Words that cut, but not at vital organs. Anora reached out and removed the data drive Joe had given her in his dying moments from the holodata and stood, her mag chair scraping along the floor. The action was more of a gesture than anything, as she did realize she had nowhere to go on an unfamiliar ship traveling through deep hyperspace, but her movement had the desired effect as the chatter abruptly ceased and the bickering spacers looked at her in the galley dimness as the holodisplay blinked out.

Jayro made it a safe distance away from the galley before he was forced to stop halfway up the ladder to the flight deck. He leaned his head against the ladder rung and hung there for a moment in the privacy of the ladder shaft, closing his eyes against the chaos of his thoughts. He was alarmed to find himself imagining stalking back into the galley and dragging Anora bodily away into the nearest dark corner of the ship and kissing her until she moaned. Jayro tapped his forehead lightly against the ladder, as if to knock his unruly thoughts from his head. He had known this woman only a matter of hours since she crashed into his life in a hail of broken glass and the roar of a speeder. She was dangerous, he told himself, shaking himself mentally and continuing his climb to the flight deck. A warning bell was sounding quietly in the far reaches of his chest somewhere.
