The fungus' mycelia begin to invade the remaining soft tissues, and in the process of consuming them, structurally fortify the dead ant's exoskeleton. Even more mycelia sprout from the ant, further anchoring it to the plant, and exuding antimicrobials to prevent competing organisms.

They are perfectly safe antimicrobials that keep cosmetics etc... SAFE FROM MICROBES AND BACTERIA and so acts as a preservative. No study has shown any danger to humans at the exposure most people encounter.
Maybe people are wearing so much make up now they use it up in 2 weeks & get too much 😉

1️⃣ "Although C. diff infections are not typically drug resistant" - this statement is a (partial) misrepresentation of the data. Many C. difficile strains are commonly resistant to multiple antimicrobials, though perhaps not typically those used for treatment.

When combatting #AMR, every antimicrobial decision must be informed.

Timely #diagnostics, actionable data and antimicrobial stewardship reduce uncertainty, guide appropriate treatment and help preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials.

A connected approach strengthens our response.

AMR Awareness: Connecting Diagnostics, Data, and Stewardship to Protect Public Health
AMR is one of the most urgent public health challenges facing the world today. Drug-resistant infections make illnesses harder to treat, increase healthcare costs, prolong hospital stays, and contribute to preventable deaths.

True to some extent with biotech as well, if you worked on antimicrobials with the well known market failure for antibiotics that need to be held in reserve to avoid resistance and therefore have no profit. Some part of my salary at my previous research institute job was funded by DoD and BARDA.

Leaving #IDweek with a few reflections:
-New antimicrobials may not be the way to overcome difficult to treat infections. Host-directed therapies are probably the future, given what really kills people is the system response
-Canada is lagging in access to antimicrobials for MDR pathogens
