Je n'imagine même pas l'émotion des archéologues à sortir un truc pareil de terre , Aphrodisias, Turquie, 1979.

For #ReliefWednesday, love conquers all. Literally. This C1 CE #relief from the Sebasteion at Aphrodisias depicts the nocturnal tryst between Aphrodite and Anchises. To the Julio-Claudians, this intimate myth was the absolute foundation of their divine right to rule. #AncientBluesky 🏺

How about another #travel photo for the letter A? This is an “AA”, I guess, because it’s the Temple of Artemis at Aphrodisias, an archeological site in Turkey. #turkiye #archeology #travel

For my first foray into #RomanSiteSaturday, here's one of my favourites: the tetrapylon, or gateway to the Temple of Aphrodite, in Aphrodisias, Turkey. Built ca. 200 CE.

Lots of other gems in Aphrodisias for the weeks to come....

Aphrodisias in Turkey is one of the @unesconow.bsky.social World Heritage Sites. It was a Roman town in Caria, founded in early 2nd century BC. #AncientSiteSunday

Mamdani: Next question! Yes, Amy.

Journalist: Mr. Mayor, do you think cities maintained their political and social centrality despite their loss of Roman-style monumentality?

Mamdani: Great question. Let me start by mentioning recent excavations in Aphrodisias…

#ReliefWednesday - Marble relief depicting Antinous as Silvanus, harvesting grapes with a dog at his side. Antinous wears a pine wreath and the exomis (Greek tunic) and carries a pruning hook. The maker's name is inscribed on the altar: 'Antonianos of Aphrodisias made this'.

Swoony heartthrob Antinous, as the god Silvanus, by Antonianos of Aphrodisias, AD 130-138. Whatever Hadrian saw in him, he was certainly a good-looking young chap. Terrible swimmer, mind.
