The so-called Ponte Loreto in Lanuvio (II-I century BCE, ancient Lanuvium) and the Via Astura. The Via Astura connected Antium to Satricum and Lanuvium and ended at the XIX mile of the Via Appia.

The Kalends of February honoured Juno Sospita, the Roman state goddess. A sanctuary in Lanuvium was wealthy enough for Octavian to borrow from it. February was a month for purification. The Romans celebrated Lupercalia, a festival designed to purify the city and encourage fertility.

This is a great photo of a fully legit maenad antefix from the Temple of Juno Sospita, showing what Gorga was attempting to replicate from his fragments and modern additions. The Gorga face looks very much like a Greek kore.

Lanuvio (ancient Lanuvium) is famous for being the birthplace of two Emperors, Antoninus Pius and Commodus (Marcus Aurelius also spent his childhood there), and for its temple of Juno Sospita (the Saviour).
