nothing better illustrates the desperate search for a media business model like a 50MB web page with a 90:10 ad-to-content ratio

prior to bluesky I worked on a p2p web browser called beaker, and I figure it might be fun to do a mini retrospective on the architecture

Conservatives have already showed us what's coming. They’ve spent the last four years reshaping the architecture of the social web to match their designs for American society at large.

So, anyone here wants to hear about Web backend architecture in OCaml using lenses, the ReaderT monad and Polymorphic Variants?

We really labored over this architecture. We wanted to balance user autonomy & control against the requirements of running an at-scale global network

The biggest decision we made was opting for a "web-inspired" architecture as opposed to a "mail-inspired" architecture (a la ActivityPub)
We'll soon be launching a sandbox environment to begin the testing phase of federation for the AT Protocol with allow-listed servers.

In advance of this launch, here are some technical details about our design decisions.

We had a misty morning in Riding Mountain National Park last week, offering some particular beauty. I always marvel at the architecture of a spider's web. 🌿

If I did, I'm not sure the company could afford it.

The skillset that goes into it is "full time web developer" territory — solid javascript competence, robust sustainable html architecture, twisty-brained CSS development, and at this point dozens/hundreds of hours of Roll20 sheet code familiarity.

The Cosmic Web is the Universe’s largest known structure: immense filaments of dark matter and galaxies stretching across billions of light-years. Galaxy clusters form at its intersections, while vast cosmic voids lie between them, shaping the architecture of the cosmos.

Also, no offence, but we don’t love American cars, or American architecture, or American web design. European design tastes are quite different from American design tastes.

I took that photo from the web. I have seen it, but did not have a photo that would do it justice. It is breathtaking.
