My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

Here's a portrait of the Arctodus, commissioned in 2022 for a project I cannot talk about yet. Arctodus, also known as the short-faced bear, lived during the Pleistocene.

The recently extinct Giant Short-faced Bear, Arctodus simus

Arctodus was part of a radiation of Tremarctine bears which went recently extinct in the Americas about 15,000-10,000 years ago, from which the Andean or Spectacled Bear of South America is the only living species

I somehow survived to the age of 52 without being aware of the extinct giant short-faced bears.

It's exciting to see snippets of #SurvivingEarth coming out from #ImpossiblePictures (www.instagram.com/picturesimpo...). One of the clips features #Arctodus, the #ShortFacedBear, here's my design sheet, which was used by the production team.

I have been very busy working in many new projects. One of them is a commission that deals with Pleistocene fauna, so I have been sketching and revisiting some old concept sketches of many animals from that time period

Scene from the Late Pleistocene of La Brea in Los Angeles, California. A pair of Arctodus simus are duking it out whilst a herd of giant bison (Bos latifrons), a pair of western camels (Camelops hesternus) and a group of Pacific mastodons calmly enjoy their evening meal. #paleoart #sciart #iceage

Arctodus is often called the “short-faced bear,” but that’s a misnomer. Its muzzle isn’t proportionally short. It’s deep. The depth creates the illusion of foreshortening for this bear that munched on a bit of everything. 🧪

Am I crazy for thinking the American lion would actually bite about as hard as Arctodus? Their skulls are actually pretty comparable in dimensions.

For a long time this Arctodus reconstruction just gave me chill vibes. The darkening sky, the heavily wooded environment, and even something about how the bear looks? Idk.
