If I had to pick a favorite, I’m going to prehistoric with Arctodus simus aka the Giant Short-Faced Bear because what’s more intimidating than a bear that makes polar bears, grizzlies, and even grolar bears look modest in com-bear-ison.

Where George Washington and the Continental Army would camp at thousands of years later, short-faced bears (Arctodus pristinus), saber-toothed cats (Smilodon gracilis), mastodons (Mammut americanum), tapirs (Tapirus haysii), and giant horses (Equus pectinatus) once called home.

arctodus or arctotherium?

Arctodus vs Smilodon

I think the main advantage of theropods at size parity is their height over quadrupeds, which makes them appear larger and therefore more intimidating. Afaik the only bears which do rear up for intimidation are sloth bears, so I'm not sure Arctotherium/Arctodus would take advantage of that.

Just watched Ep 8: When America Flooded.

Usual flaws and laughably inaccurate dire wolves aside, this was decent. The megafauna extinction only really came into play in the latter half, but what it did get was surprisingly somber. Arguably the bleakest episode of all. A solid end to an okay series.

El último amanecer para un gigante

Este Arctodus simus contempla el fin de su era, mientras el mundo que conoció desaparece. Una conmovedora narración visual que nos recuerda la fragilidad de la vida.

...how carnivorous was Arctodus again? Because a bear going straight for meat right out of hibernation sounds pretty weird

many viewers - myself included - may have felt conflicted about watching the finale of #survivingearth given what happened over the weekend, but the show's vfx executive producer has confirmed that no genAI was used in production

#SurvivingEarth for once acknowledges human impact as a cause of megafaunal extinctions, though it still downplays how much of a problem we were (we were the biggest factor, not the final nail in the coffin, especially for warm-climate specialists or generalists like Arctodus).

So that was When America Melted, ending Surviving Earth.

It was a good ending to the show as it could be, an 8/10.

Well, the show was a fine addition to the palaeo canon. Not as bad it could have been. A decent ending to Tim Haines' true career.

Plus it is a good way to showcase the humbler origins of Smilodon (the leopard equivalent in this ecosystem) and Arctodus (which, even at only the size of a large American black bear at this point, was the biggest carnivoran and one of the two biggest land predators here).

Meet Artodus, the embodiment of the "'Arctodus" concept.
Artodus lived during the Pleistocene epoch. She was incredibly large, standing about three meters tall, and hunted dire wolves, bison, and horses. Her powerful jaws could crush bone with ease.

Would it be pedantic to ask how Arctodus could be an obligate scavenger if they also ate plants?
July 26, 2026 at 12:45 PM
T. rex, Arctodus, and Venaticosuchus as obligate scavengers. The Clovis with “but they COULD’VE also scavenged, so there’s no proof they regularly hunted proboscideans”.

All of them stupid.

(Also remembered a bit too late that you could add Allosaurus to the mix)

What do T. rex, Arctodus simus, Venaticosuchus, and the Clovis people all have in common?
July 25, 2026 at 7:08 PM
I have not been killed by an arctodus before, I swear!
July 24, 2026 at 6:43 PM
From a cosmic perspective, would you rather be an enemy of mooses or the enemy of bears?

Arctodus is extinct, moose reign supreme as North American megafauna.
