It strikes me that the wasian identity is only partially about being half white—although it is also defined by proximity to whiteness—but also about defining Asianness as being explicitly East Asian.

I’m unclear about the metric for “better rep” in this instance. Oftentimes these pleas direct the narratives toward some notion of what depictions of asianness, especially diasporic ones, are more or less genuine than others, which always bugs me.

And let’s say it’s not grievance. Maybe the asianness shows up as something else, but how do people want that to be expressed, exactly? Is it simply aesthetic? What does it look like for diasporic people with different depths of connection to their culture of origin?

No, I think Helen is absolutely spot on. All across America, high school seniors are considering their college options according to three criteria:
1) Wokeness coefficient, a very real thing kids care about;
2) The Covid lockdown rolled out 5 years ago, when the students were 12; &
3) Asianness.
