Nothing has done more to discredit r/askahistorian than this clown (not that it had much credibility to start with)

Were north and south enemies before the war?

@clinicalliz.bsky.social what's the right French revolution angle here? #AskAHistorian

If you have a Reddit account, you might want to go on AskAHistorian. They always have great book recommendations for even the most specific subjects.

dear #skystorians,

what would your book recommendations be to someone who wishes to deepen & expand their understanding of history as a discipline? think of it as curating a starterpack for a DYI Master's degree in History.

thank you so much 🥰💖

Lauren Derby is on Reddit's #AskAHistorian right now, talking about her new book "Bêtes Noires," which discusses the history of sorcery in the Dominican Republic & Haiti. Ask her anything!

Consequences for Russia of loss in Syria:
1. Reminder that Russia often loses wars;
2. Difficulty in maintaining colonial extraction in Africa;
3. Possibility of new pipelines to Europe;
4. Doctrine of supporting dictators fails.

There are quality subs there ( the cat subs are great, AskAHistorian is great) but Reddit keeps pushing other subs onto you to drive engagement.

And this comment about veganism and India's medal tally is arguably the stupidest and most ignorant comment one can make about this subject.

jealous of everyone on askahistorian because their activity implies that their area of expertise is actually interesting 😔
March 5, 2025 at 8:39 PM
Maybe in heavily moderated forums like /AskAHistorian, otherwise it's always been a website where people make shit up for engagement or a first-year college student tries to explain how life really works.

Imagine a world where every WW2 question in r/askahistorian has three guys who are IJA hold-outs going to the absolute mat claiming everything post Battle of the Ilu River is western propaganda.

Or the suspiciously informative answers from Argentinians “who’ve never been to Europe.”
We missed out on some generational poasters in the decades following the war by failing to invent the Internet early enough

So I know the Romans had knowledge of and used cement.

But where they the first to do so? Or was there a civilization before them who also knew about cement already?

It's only tangentially fantasy in that it takes place sometime in the 1300s(?) in a very kind of historical setting where this weird curse just happened to occur. I wonder if middle age/renaissance historians have a soft spot for it as well? Sort of like a Knight's Tale? #askahistorian

Re-edited.
I avoid the war crimes discussion with the fandom because 9/10 times nobody knows what a war crime is and how it's different from crimes against humanity. r/AskaHistorian has good threads on the legal challenges and persistent myths that misinform the public. It can get uncomfortable.

Did not expect to find a highly erudite and scholarly 1000 word reply to the question of whether or not Abu al-Ala al Ma'arri could be considered an atheist on Reddit r/AskaHistorian and, Wow.
