#Astatotilapia
Today’s #SundayFishSketch is my nemesis, the cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni. The sex determination system in these guys is the source of at least 3 of my current headaches 😒

He looks like a Female Astatotilapia burtoni fish mouth sitting there like that.

How perfect

In crater Lake Masoko one fish species is splitting into shallow and deep-living ecotypes occupying different light environments. New research shows their visual systems are diverging, and how colours of male eggspots have changed to maximise their visibility. doi.org/10.1093/molb...

Our new iScience study with @todthiele.bsky.social and @arrenberglab.bsky.social asks: how do larval cichlids actually perform this behavior?

I’m looking to hire a postdoc to join our lab at UCLA! We study the genes, hormones, and cells that regulate social behavior in the African cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni (in a separate post we’re looking for a PhD student) @sbn-bsky.bsky.social 1/3

I ran to look it up...😬

Good morning, #SBN2026! The cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni (researchers) are taking over Niagara Falls! Three trainees from the Alward lab are presenting at today’s poster session. See flier below. Come by P9 (Lauren), P26 (Maddy), and P41 (Lexi) to see what we’ve been up to! @sbn-bsky.bsky.social

Very cool study by Sebastian Alvarado looking at how a cichlid species, Astatotilapia burtoni, raised in different gravel colors (blue versus yellow) changes the fishes color and behavior - and that’s influenced by DNA methylation #Evol2024

Our first Frank A. Beach Award winner was Dr. Beau Alward, who gave a wonderful talk on the nuances of steroid action in the brain on territoriality and mating behavior in Astatotilapia. 🐟️ Congrats to Dr. Alward for this well-deserved award!! 🎉

Smith, Musilova & @astridboehne@bsky.social find new sex chromosomes in a group of cichlids from Lake Tanganyika and show that while these involve the same chromosome pairs, the sex chromosomes evolved independently.

I think we can say that there is a paraphyletic 'riverine' assemblage that will never join the Victorian Haplochromis clade unless that clade also includes every haplochromine endemic to Lake Malawi. I propose we call that Astatotilapia for now.

We’re recruiting a PhD student to join our lab at UCLA! (we’re also recruiting a postdoc; details posted separately). Our lab studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying social behavior using the African cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni as a model. @sbn-bsky.bsky.social 1/3
