At the British Museum tablet room they accidentally issued me the Atrahasis Epic (Babylonian flood myth) rather than the tablets I was actually there to see.
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

"so like i'm like, of course if you put a stage play rendition of the Epic of Gilgamesh in front of me, I'm gonna wanna watch it, but in thinking of other productions, some headmate, probably Minion, is immediately yelling ATRAHASIS WITH DRAG QUEENS/KINGS and i'm like yeah that would slap actually"

"The Genesis flood story is Atrahasis after its been sent round the Ancient Near Eastern office & two-dozen people have added track changes to it."

Genesis 2-3 is a story desgined to explain certain harsh realities of human living, much like Atrahasis functioned for ancient Mesopotamians. Both stories explain realities concerning childbearing and harsh agricultural realities.

I can't get enough of Atrahasis for this reason. Atrahasis > Gilgamesh any day. It's a big part of my little book that's coming out.

he watery region beneath the earth's surface and is also the god of wisdom and defender of humanity.

When the other gods decide to flood the Earth, it is Enki who thwarts their plans by telling Atrahasis to build a boat. When Inanna's city ascends in Sumerian politics, it is from Enki that

The flood tablet of the epic is largely based on the sumerian poem atrahasis

my other fgo master ocs (katalina and henrik) are really cool but unfortunately I can't make a hgw out of them bc they all have rider class servants (atrahasis-kubaba and huginn-muninn)

I read “the earliest epic stories” and thought “I could be here for a bit of Atrahasis ressourcement” but that is not what seems to be happening here, huh

as i understand, every single source asserting ishara was equated with ishtar goes back to the same 1969 mistranslation of Atrahasis (with the most recent example being from... 2023!?); no independent evidence has been provided beyond that

The Atrahasis Epic is ancient flood mythology with teeth: humans are created to labor for the gods, become too noisy to tolerate, and nearly get wiped out by a divine flood — until Enki warns one wise man to build an ark.

Thanks! Everyone should read Atrahasis all the time because it is awesome.

The Book of Genesis is itself FAN FICTION.

It's a mythological backstory cobbled together by the nationalist needs of a backwater Judahite Iron Age city-state precariously sitting in the crossroads of older and more powerful empires.

The Flood? Cribbed from the Sumerian Atrahasis.
El? From Ugarit.

It's funny to me that when the standard babylonian version of the epic was stitched together (likely not by one person but evolved over time), they combined a bunch of sumerian gilgamesh poems and then just. Randomly put in atrahasis which is completely unrelated. For funsies ig

That’s right. I’m not a biblical scholar, so the only knowledge I can add to this is that there was a Sumerian flood story, as well as an Old Babylonian one (Atrahasis) before Tablet 11 of the Standard Babylonian Gilgamesh, which you’re quite right was written down after 1400 BCE

Igigi

The pre-Gilgamesh “Atrahasis” even has *humans* as the labour-saving AI! Who go awry. And force a reboot (flood). 😊

2. I'm covering a range of related literature - it's the bible in historic & literary context

for instance, we're starting with atrahasis and ANE flood epic that predates the genesis account

Before Arnamzu, there was Atrahasis.
Before Falkenstein, Ashurbanipal.
The flood myths are real. The alchemy was never just symbolic.
The fiction rests on old bones.
