A friend just had her checking account wiped out by her family's new health insurance premium (which went from $890 a month to $2800). The thing is, she'd cancelled the policy in early December, assuming it would also cancel the autopay.

Autopay drove me into homelessness when BoA took over my mortgage but did not tell me. Autopaid my original mortgage lender so BoA took one too and refused to refund. Bills not paid so % and penalties skyrocketed.
Autopay is insidious. My credit union could not stop it.

one significant problem we have is a political culture -- at least in the center-left -- which is adverse, both for cynical and principled reasons, to a political culture on the left which demands anything other than a periodic vote and autopay donations.
politicians aren't "owed" anything. they are public servants. "but i'd be sad if i retired" who CARES.
