Heads up introverts, autodidacts and other former gifted kids: at this point if you haven't covered up your old harry potter tattoos.... uhhh...... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.............
A portion of every dollar spent on Harry Potter merchandise goes to anti-transgender campaigns.

Learning in school is not enough. You must continue to teach yourself throughout your life. Study history, read myths, memorize poems, get acquainted with the greatest philosophers & writers. In an age when tech is cooking many brains, we need an army of autodidacts.

It's popular on here and sneerclub to mock the rationalists for being rogue autodidacts who aren't sufficiently deferential and servile to the subculture called academia, but imo, that's the opposite of their failure mode: they're too fucking compliant unoriginal undriven chumps.

And again, folks a century ago weren’t inherently more intelligent than we are. I believe we could revive a culture, not of intellectuals but of autodidacts. People who are curious about the world, who are excited to learn and study together in community.

the reality is that most people who excelled the most at things relating to security/strategy are autodidacts. abraham lincoln spent inordinate amounts of time using his presidential borrowing privileges at the library of congress to cram military history and military science textbooks during acw

Also working-class autodidacts didn't just read alone - they read in groups, set up libraries and reading rooms, and battled for Mechanics' Institutes (many long ago merged into unis) to teach music, history, and politics. They built the public adult education infrastructure that's being destroyed
This misses the point. Self-education has become more accessible in the last 20 years than at any point in history, though not through ‘amateur reading’.
The problem isn’t access to information but learning how to evaluate it critically - and that brings us back to universities (and Humanities)

This belief in SV is rampant because college computer science education is bad. Not useless but deeply flawed to the point that autodidacts outdo it rather more often than should be possible.
what a miserable conception of human existence from a DeepMind guy

I often think about @tressiemcphd.bsky.social's description of how all these "innovations" are geared towards the ways "roaming autodidacts" think they've learned things, at the expense of...well, everyone else.

We need to bring the concept of autodidacts back into circulation—those who learn things for the pure joy of learning—the idea that you don’t have to be formally schooled to educate yourself. The word “amateur” comes from the Latin for “love,” and to learn is to love.
