When Harris' old lags did to stone-built cities what LeMay's B29s did to wood-built ones, what Bomber Command could have done left loose on Japan is probably best not to think about.

The idea was that Iwo Jima would give B29s operating from Tinian the protection of fighters from Iwo Jima, and an emergency landing airfield.
But only 36 B29s made essential emergency landings there, and only a few Japanese fighters could catch the B29s at high altitude.

I lost my dad 30 years ago. 27 missions over Europe in B17s, 8 years in B29s as Capt and instructor, 3 A-Bomb tests and 30 years flying for the airlines.
Not bad for a high school dropout from the rez!

Only today did I learn in that in 1978 he made a trip to Harlingen, Texas to visit one of the few B29s still flying

23rd Oct 1951: ‘Black Tuesday’. During a mission to attack the North Korean airfield at Namsi, 9 USAF B29s were engaged by Soviet-manned MiG 15s. Despite a strong fighter escort, 3 were shot down and 3 more written off due to severe damage. 28 airmen were killed, 7 became POWs and 5 were rescued.
