Got home from Crete and finally into bed at 4am. Then drove to Kineton today for 6 new rescue chooks!
5 Browns and a Legbar were successfully grabbed 😂 They were a feisty lot for the BHWT volunteers to wrangle ❤️

I am. I get them from a specific charity (BHWT) and they haven't had a rehoming near me for ages. I can't wait. I lost four all at once so have super reinforced my chicken area.
(Bella, Bear, Mabel and Agnes. RIP).

I’m one of the volunteers with BHWT. All my chickens are from there. ❤️

Jon Joy, a BHWT volunteer said:
“People can worry about the unknowns of keeping hens, but they are friendly, inquisitive and surprisingly low-maintenance. We should have got hens years earlier. Each one has a completely different personality, and you quickly realise what wonderful pets they make.”

Something a bit different for the end of the week. Here's a video from the British Hen Foundation on ITV News, talking about the work that they do rescuing hens after their egg-laying career has come to an end.

And she used to lay the biggest eggs until she got her first hormone implant a few weeks ago when she started laying soft shell eggs. She was soooo vocal with poor Zoe the vet!

Samosa is a chronic tea-stealer. This was Deckchair Dreaming from @birdandblendtea (a gift from @jpseabright!). Chamomile, apple, rosehip, linden blossom, hibiscus and orange peel, it's very chicken friendly!

The wildflower meadow in the back part of the garden is turning into a fun daisy jungle for the chickens. 🥰

I was very sad to lose Pakora a few weeks ago. She was a pretty easy-going chicken, loved a bit of wellie-pecking, loved to come upstairs and get treats, and was often seen giving Perseus's face a good clean. ❤️

BHWT don't normally have any problems rehoming hens. Most are allocated well ahead of the rescue as people reserve them online. If this isn't happening then it must be due to the continuing bird flu lockdown. People will be reluctant to bring new hens onto their property and risk passing it on.

A day in the life of Linda. Aka my new research assistant 🥰

It's only been 10 days since she and her buddies were adopted and she's such a friendly and inquisitive little thing.

At 18 months old, the hens have reached the end of their commercial life. Anyone looking to adopt simply needs to offer these hens security, food and water and a little bit of TLC, says the BHWT. To adopt visit bhwt.org.uk/hen-adoption and click ‘adopt’ next to the location nearest to you (Didcot).

Andy Hill at the British Hen Welfare Trust: “Hens can bring so much joy. They’re funny, curious little characters. Plus, they’re still more than happy to pop out the occasional egg. With spring approaching, this is the ideal time to start – and these hens are more than ready for a fresh beginning.”

The race is on to re-home 120 ex-commercial laying hens in Didcot before February 8th. The British Hen Welfare Trust is appealing for would-be kind hearted chicken keepers to come forward by 4pm Friday and give the hens a chance at a free range retirement.
