1/7 Really happy to see my PhD work published in ✨Developmental Cell✨ today! We find human endoderm is specified by two developmental trajectories 🔀, and the choice between alternate routes is dictated by the combinatorial BMP4/Activin signalling. www.cell.com/developmenta...

Hi paleontologist with a background in developmental biology here. Though we don’t have direct evidence of dinosaur penises, developmental evidence suggests they did.

Chickens don’t have penises because their developing genitals get a targeted cell death signal called bmp4.

So exciting to see this in print! Ever wondered how embryonic cells know what (fate) to become during early development? In particular when they might see different signaling cues? We investigated this!

And a lovely cover from Zoe Ruiz and @oliveringe.bsky.social!

A lovely example of the interplay of morphogen dynamics, tissue mechanics, cell mechanics and signal transduction at the most crucial stage of embryogenesis. And a good example of why talk of development being "programmed" into the genome is simply the wrong language.

We used optogenetics to control the transcription of BMP4 in pluripotent stem cells. We create light-driven models of gastrulation with no colony edges or with streak-like geometries. Purely coincidental but good timing with the Nobel announcement this week...

Modern birds evolved *away* from the penis.

We know this not only because the ancient bird families still have penises but because bird embryos develop phalluses and then lose the phallus if the Bmp4 gene is active.

(Bird embryos also have dinosaur tails that form and then go away)
A lot of ppl are responding to this meme with the assumption that *all* Dinos copulate via a cloacal kiss

Counter to this logic is that Paleognaths (ostriches, emus, tinamous, etc …) & Galloanseriformes (ducks, geese, swans, etc … ) are some of the most *ancient* bird families & *they* have penises
Claiming that Dinosaurs are "fake" because you can't image a way for them to copulate is such a weird way to announce to the world:

Crosstalk between tissue mechanics and BMP4 signaling regulates symmetry breaking in human gastrula models
Brivanlou and colleagues used optogenetics to spatially control BMP4 expression in human stem cell models across different mechanical regimes. By combining these experiments with mathematical modeling, they dissected how biochemical signals and mechanical forces integrate to initiate symmetry breaking at the onset of gastrulation.
