Climate change is altering the range and activity of ticks. The Mid-Atlantic is seeing cases of babesiosis, a parasitic disease spread by deer ticks. Some people have no symptoms, but babesiosis can lead to hemolytic anemia.

Study Reveals Emerging Cases of Babesiosis from Tick Bites in Mid-Atlantic Region
A newly published study in the Journal of Medical Entomology provides critical insights into the emergence of babesiosis in the Mid-Atlantic region, documenting human cases and the presence of Babesia microti in local tick populations.

The number of babesiosis cases from ticks is increasing. Prof. Durland Fish says babesiosis has the potential to become a much more important public health threat than Lyme disease because of its high mortality rate.

Babesiosis is pretty interesting. A tickborne parasite that infects red blood cells just like malaria. Mostly in New England. Looks like a Maltese cross inside a red blood cell under the microscope.

Comparative Outcomes of Babesiosis in Immunocompromised and Non-Immunocompromised Hosts: A Multicenter Cohort Study
Babesiosis poses significant risks of adverse outcomes in individuals with immunocompromising conditions (IC) and asplenia/hyposplenia (AH). This study compares clinical outcomes between these vulnerable groups and immunocompetent patients.

A bit late to the party about sharing this news, but so excited to be announcing our open-label trial of tafenoquine for treating chronic babesiosis! Babesia is a parasite that is often carried by ticks and it is a common co-infection alongside #lyme.

Seamus came home on 18 September.

Hit by a car in August — ruptured spleen, emergency surgery. Then his red cell count started falling and wouldn't stop. Babesiosis, and no spleen left to fight it.

We asked a second vet. He asked a better question. The counts held.
