And there you have it! My own personal overcoat! Not perfect by any means, but in retrospect a wildly successful over ambitious first sewing project and a testament to the power of hyperfocus! (Timeline was bought the book in January, finished the coat a couple weeks ago in May)

So I decided to learn how to draft one!
Found this old book on tailoring with instructions for drafting a Balmacaan online. Started with a scale model draft, that I made into a tiny coat to learn hand sewing and how patterns become 3D shapes

I just finished a big project and I’m really proud.
Lost my beloved cat of 15 years last December; between ADD, grief, and sobriety, “decided” to jump into a new hobby.
I wanted to make a coat!
Specifically landed on a Balmacaan made of traditional oilskin. (Lol)
Here’s a thread showing the process!

Starting with outerwear, we have a blazer and a flight jacket with the pockets from a Carhartt Michigan jacket. Rounding out is a Balmacaan coat with chin strap.

Prices are 135,000 JPY (913 USD) for the coat, 130,000 JPY ($879) for the blazer and 120,000 JPY ($812) for the jacket.

A timely reminder that one should choose a short coat, as in the photo, to go fartwalking in. A balmacaan or duster will not provide adequate ventilation.

I have a cashmere shawl in the same colour and size as the orange one in the third pic, and it's perfect for winter menswear. I just fold it once to make a rectangle and wear it beneath a long, billowy cashmere balmacaan.

That's a good length for the winter. This time of year I pretty much live in a belted cashmere balmacaan that falls to mid-calf. Just imagine how good it'll look when the wind catches it and it billows out behind you like a fucking superhero cape.
