In January 2023, on the bicentenary of my Taylor ancestors’ arrival in Van Diemen's Land, I wrote about their voyage to Hobart on the Princess Charlotte. I have since found out much more. My fifth great-grandparents George Taylor (1758–1828) and Mary Taylor née Low (1768–1850), farmers from Balvaird near Abernethy in Perthshire, emigrated with six of their eight children. George and three of his sons—Robert, David, and George—had applied to the Colonial Office in December 1821 for permission to settle in Van Diemen's Land.
