#RomanSiteSaturday - The Barbegal Aqueduct and Mills in southern France, built in the 2nd century AD, used water from two aqueducts to power 16 water wheels, creating the greatest concentration of mechanical power in antiquity. The mills likely supplied much of the flour for nearby Arelate (Arles).

With all the Roman history around us, I had to insist on a few detours to see the less centrally located sites. My favorites of these were the Barbegal aqueduct and mill complex and the Pont Flavien and Pont Julien bridges.

And sometimes it's not a technological issue but a social, or legal, or economic one. They clearly *could have* developed water power to a much greater degree, but for some reason didn't.

For Romanists, it's "oh, right, slavery" as the 1st answer to so many seemingly unrelated questions. This week in class, it was "but why don't we have more Barbegal water mills?" www.nature.com/articles/s41... & "Why the Augustales?" www.coopculture.it/en/poi/mensa...

Hat man doch. Sonne zum Beispiel für Salzgewinnung. Oder Wind und Wasser für Getreidemühlen. Bereits die Römer hatten Großanlagen.

Visited a couple of years ago, achieving a life-time's ambition! Also went to the aqueduct and mills at Barbegal which was amazing.

Great point, specifically regarding the Barbegal mills. But note the driver: urban food supply.
That ties back to earlier point: the South explicitly stifled urbanization. By keeping the population rural and dispersed, they removed the one specific pressure that actually forced Rome to mechanize.

Did you know: the Romans had watermills, which were invented circa 300 BC, but they did not invent wind-powered mills, which appeared in the Levant circa 800 CE and spread to Europe post 1200 CE.

Don Quixote would have been quite happy in Rome.

The Romans had serious watermills - at Barbegal there is a cascade of them fed by an aqueduct. An immense effort to upgrade from animal driven small mills to save labour.
There is likely a parallel to who built that aqueduct and the railroad tracks in the Confederate states for the steam trains.

They did this using water delivered from the hills through an aqueduct. The system could thus produce food for the many thousand...
