Yesterday I resumed my 'perambulation' of the 17th century parish boundary of Portishead, the subject of my current research on 'Everyday Life in the Seventeenth Century English Village'. My 'research walk' started where the parishioners would have done, at the church...🧵

Reposted almost exactly a year on, as this is on the #BeatingTheBounds of #StHelens route - we're walking all 44 miles this Sunday. See my other posts for details. All welcome, for as much or as little as you fancy.

We'll only take one day to beat the bounds of #StHelens Borough - Sunday 14 June.

There *will* be good ale, though, and possibly cakes. Further details in due course.

Glenfield had known happier times before this particular priest turned up. One of the witnesses in this case reported that in the good old days they would take three days to beat the bounds, and on the first day they would hear 'a St Johns gospel and [enjoy] good ale and cakes'.

Thank you to our latest sponsors for #StHelens #BeatingTheBounds, coming up this Sunday - a 44 mile walk raising £ for the local branch of Mind. It is the 10th edition, so I think we've successfully recreated a tradition.

It's an early night for me, in prep for the 43 miler for @sthelensmind.bsky.social tomorrow, taking in a famous racecourse, a barrow/motte, England's 1st industrial canal, a former workhouse, a historic beacon & lots of pleasant countryside. #StHelens #BeatingTheBounds

Rustic simplicity at The Masons, #Billinge - my favourite pub, & where we will end this Sunday's #BeatingTheBounds walk. Thanks again to Dan and family for hosting us there, and generally supporting our efforts. We appreciate it.

It's is terrific to have a major international event in the parish, so to speak, but I'm especially chuffed to discover that the day two route seems to include a short length of our #StHelens #BeatingTheBounds route, in Billinge. Shucks.

Excellent stuff. I set up the #BeatingTheBounds walk in #StHelens in 2017 very much in this spirit. The differences are that ours is annual (next year will be the 10th), and much longer (43 miles, due to being around a post-1972 Local Government Act boundary).

I just walked 8 miles alongside the #RiverWeaver and Trent & Mersey Canal, as part of my buildup to #BeatingTheBounds in a couple of weeks. Here is the western entrance to the Saltersford Tunnel on the canal, with a vintage British Waterways sign.

A duty of care... also to the water running across and under the land? To the streams & the rivers, & that the dew and the raindrops penetrating the soil may be free of pollutants? Parish-based networks of stewardship... 🧵 2/
