Glenfield had known happier times before this particular priest turned up. One of the witnesses in this case reported that in the good old days they would take three days to beat the bounds, and on the first day they would hear 'a St Johns gospel and [enjoy] good ale and cakes'.

Excellent stuff. I set up the #BeatingTheBounds walk in #StHelens in 2017 very much in this spirit. The differences are that ours is annual (next year will be the 10th), and much longer (43 miles, due to being around a post-1972 Local Government Act boundary).

I just walked 8 miles alongside the #RiverWeaver and Trent & Mersey Canal, as part of my buildup to #BeatingTheBounds in a couple of weeks. Here is the western entrance to the Saltersford Tunnel on the canal, with a vintage British Waterways sign.

The 9th annual #BeatingTheBounds #StHelens was a treat yesterday: 15 starters at 0430, 8 finishers at 20.15, with others joining for parts of the 42.5 mile route, raising £790 (+Gift Aid) for @sthelensmind.bsky.social.
