The bee season has also begun here. Many queen bumblebees (Bombus terrestris, B. pratorum, B. lapidarius and B. hypnorum) and solitary bees (Andrena vaga, A. bicolor, Xylocopa violacea, Osmia cornuta) have been flying around Braunschweig since this week. #BeesUp

Henri Greil, Leiter des Projekts „BeesUp“ des Instituts für Bienenschutz am Julius Kühn-Institut Braunschweig: „Im BeesUp Projekt, aber auch weiteren Projekten, wie FInAL und MonViA, haben wir am JKI Institut für Bienenschutz seit 2020 bundesweit standardisierte Monitorings und weitere Erfassungen von Wildbienen durchgeführt. Ein Schwerpunkt der Arbeiten lag auf der Stadt Braunschweig und der umgebenden niedersächsischen Agrarlandschaft. Die räumliche und zeitliche Verbreitung der Arten wurde erfasst und auch zahlreiche seltene und gefährdete Arten gefunden. Die Beobachtungsdaten bilden die Grundlage einer KI-unterstützten Wildbienenerkennungsfunktion, die wir im BeesUp-Projekt in Kooperation mit der TU Ilmenau entwickelt haben und die unter mapbee.tu-ilmenau.de frei nutzbar ist.“

This Halictus tumulorum was caught by a crab spider while collecting pollen. Bees are the most important pollinators. But they are also a vital food source for numerous animal species.

17.10. Today I only found a single Bombus pascuorum queen after searching for a while, but on the way back I surprisingly found a Bombus vestalis, possibly one of the last cuckoo bumblebees of the year. I will keep my eyes open.
