Neil Young made an unexpected return to the stage for his first live performance of 2026, appearing at a benefit concert in Vancouver dedicated to Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki’s 90th birthday. The event took place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and featured a number of high-profile guests, including Jane Fonda, Al Gore and Sarah McLachlan, alongside Young’s surprise appearance. The performance came after the musician had earlier cancelled all of his planned 2026 tour dates, including a full UK and European run, stating that it was “not the time” for touring. He later reassured fans that he was taking a break, “listening to my body”, and that “all is good”. During the intimate set, Young performed solo renditions of two of his most celebrated songs. He opened with a heartfelt acoustic version of ‘Heart Of Gold’, delivered standing alone on stage, before moving to piano for a moving performance of ‘After The Gold Rush’, which also included harmonica. The stripped-back arrangements highlighted the emotional depth of both tracks and marked a rare live appearance for the artist this year. Beyond the performance, it has been reported that Young’s new album with The Chrome Hearts has now been completed, including material such as reworked songs written decades ago. He has also continued to speak publicly about political issues, expressing criticism of Donald Trump and releasing the protest track ‘Big Crime’ earlier in the year. Additionally, the Chrome Hearts recently saw a trademark lawsuit against them dropped, resolving a legal dispute surrounding the band’s name.
