I was a kid in 1976 for the bicentenial. The country was dealing with stagflation, high gasoline prices, the war in Vietnam had ended badly. They still threw a year-long wing-ding of a party with rock & roll and jazz, and country and every other kind of music, and events all over the country.

Perhaps his best known work, created for the USMC Bicentenial in ‘75.

Watching Bicentenial man again after like... 20 years. I forgot how really strange it is and the more I think about it the weirder it gets.

Being quite ancient I can clearly recall the excitement around the bicentenial in 1976. I know this year doesn't mark a century but still you'd expect SOME celebration. It all seems rather flat.

We - my parents and my late sister - lived in Edmonton, AB, 1976-1977 and my dad who collected stamps (still does, kind of, but stamps are history in Denmark), bought these commemorative stamps celebrating the US Bicentenial. Next year it's the 250 year anniversary ... 1/3 #USA

1976 Bally Freedom 🦅 🥁 solid state pinball machine. Released to celebrate the American Bicentenial. There’s some dispute as to who designed the game, but most believe now that it was George Christian.

I'm old as hell so I remember all the excitement and ramping up of all the rah rah america shit for the bicentenial in '76. This July marks 250 years since the founding and I haven't heard jack shit about it. Not surprising because who the fuck would be proud of this piece of shit country.

I'm a bicentennial baby. My mom collected the quarters for me. I've got two boxes of swag. I've been waiting to turn 50 for decades to throw a GIANT Americana/bicentenial/250th party.

And instead. I get this.

It's one of the most minor of their crimes, but this? Its personal.
I’m currently at the Washington Monument:

We went to a hog roast at the local Trinitarian Presbyterians' bicentenial hooley. It was pretty fun, apart from the bit when one of the elders explained Trinitarian Presbyterianism and Mrs Wrong observed "So, just like Catholics then?".

I’d have Bicentenial Man in the top 10 too. Also starring Sam Neill. One of the greatest Asimov adaptations.

I started 1st grade in 1975 and I can tell you even I remember an entire year of planning. We worked on Bicentenial projects at school, heard about them on the local and national news. The whole country was involved in preparing for a year long celebration. Is anything even happening this year?
