As @bleeperactive.bsky.social add new BikeBunkers to the service, they display the location of each one on a map which you can view on bikebunkers.ie

The map shows Dublin's four local authorities and that there are now 55 BikeBunkers on the streets within @dubcitycouncil.bsky.social's area.

Yep I liked the collapsible bins idea - though I’m not sure if they’d be a solution for the organic waste issue? I also like the communal bins idea - though I imagine trying to find sites for them would be a total ‘mare (as a veteran of the original bikebunkers installation.)

The new BikeBunkers in Dublin City Council are equipped with Bold Smart Locks - Users can now easily access a BikeBunker with their phone.

...is not reflective of the cost and is highly subsidised. Nobody had the funding to provide BikeBunkers at that level of subsidy.

The lockers also come with extra costs -- the units, the locking systems, and the management of the system, including access, maintenance, customer service, etc.

-- After the inner city, the Kimmage-Rathmines area is one of the first areas to get the lockers A total of 1,463 Dublin residents have registered their interest in renting 2,633 potential spaces in on-street bicycle lockers called BikeBunkers, which are aimed at residents without secure bicycle parking near their homes. That data is as of last month, when around 20 BikeBunkers had been installed, providing 120 spaces.

Great to see we now have 11 BikeBunkers around Stoneybatter - but it would be great to see a LOT more!

That’s just 55 (?) bike spaces to serve thousands of people living in small properties, most without gardens.

You can find out more or register interest here:

In Dublin, the local authority is paying for the supply (purchase), installation, and maintenance of the BikeBunkers (our company is contracted to operate this service on their behalf), and the end users pay €100/yr per parking space. Each bunker has six parking spaces.

doesn't need to be addressed just by "bread bin" type on-street parking.

When I worked for a London Borough I ran a programme to help people have secure/convenient parking with subsidised "Bikebunkers" like this www.robertdyas.co.uk/trimetals-bi... (see also Asgard and others).

Cost is...

Hi Oisín, one option could be to let people themselves decide. Even with side passages, they may have reasons to want them. Then install based on demand.

Thanks Darragh.

Also just to note that the #BikeBunkers tender and contract was designed to enable the other 3 local authorities in Dublin to use also - saving them the procurement effort and time.

So same as #DublinCanvas, it's a solution for the Dublin Region.

With BikeBunkers coming to Dublin, this UK article on the political considerations involved in accelerating delivery is extremely relevant...

"Politicians must be prepared to respectfully disagree with their residents, to deliver for their other residents."

Why we hear less from those who would benefit from change on our streets. How we accelerated our cycle hangar program. And how to deal with the feelings that surround them.
