It wasn't safe before (bc drivers were constantly using the bikelanes as loading zones) so clearly the fix is... to remove the bikelanes. Cool.

Ask #RuralAlberta about #BikeLanes? Might as well ask a fish #abpoli
I was listening to the news this morning and heard Smith suggest that there would be another referendum in 2027 about stuff like bike lanes, etc

Did anyone else hear this?

F*ck me, as long as the UCP are in power we are going to waste all Alberta's money on culture war crap

EB and WB on Bloor Street West between Islington and Royal York. Best traffic flow in years...

Vehicular cyclists are a the enemy of cycling for 95% of people. They only want “real cyclists” to ride. We even have them in Copenhagen, arguing that cycling was safer before we built all those bikelanes. 🤷🏻‍♂️ In this case the top scenario would result in a fine, though.

Public review process does remain even if we pass the ballot props. The measures prevent a handful of rich cranks who’d rather live in Scarsdale from stonewalling bikelanes till we all die from cars hitting us.

Passing 1 will do wonders for accessibility of outdoor space for disabled folks and anyone who cannot afford to get COVID. Passing 3 is for bikelanes so rich assholes can’t stall them indefinitely. These are real problems and NYC voters can make concrete change via the ballot measures! Vote yes!

Also, he could stop ripping out bikelanes, that would save several millions. And he could stop fighting citizens trying to protect public interests in court. And scrap the feasibily study on building a tunnel under the 401--already found to be infeasible. That would save millions.

I am a huge fan of #BikeLanes! But not all bike lanes are created equal, and some actually direct people into harm's way...like when they're immediately adjacent to on-street parking.

Here's why I refuse to ride in the bike lane on this street:

There are some limitations. Like... amount of rain per day doesn't perfectly translate to volume of rain at a given time.

Amount of snow doesn't necessarily correspond to actual road conditions (if you're lucky to live in a city that plows bikelanes like Mpls), etc., but still super helpful.

I think one reason I don’t get as angry biking in NL when a car blocks a bike lane is bc most of the bike lanes are safe & the parked car is an inconvenience.

In the US, I get much angrier bc most of the bike lanes suck & the car parked in the bike lane also makes it dangerous for me.

you know you can make bikelanes in lego, right? ;)

Yep. Better leave those #bikelanes alone Doug.
Even your base in Etobicoke is giving you the side eye.

Heck you can say Ward 3 is weird in reverse: Bradford led in our ward by a small margin but still Chow’s close ally Amber Morley won and we elected a Liberal MPP not the PC MPP who saved us from bikelanes.
But Ward 1 is interesting though I guess they do what Ford tells them too (he liked Chow?).

(I actually am vocally critical of car-centrism though, right to the point that I've persuaded Lego to reintroduce bikelanes so that kids could play slightly less car-centric)

Toronto cyclists rally against bike lane removals as government completes first phase of project
Dozens of cyclists and advocacy groups gathered at Queen's Park in Toronto on Saturday to protest the Ontario government's decision to remove bike lanes, particularly along Bloor Street West in Etobicoke. The protest followed Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria's announcement that the removal of the 1.2-kilometre bike lane stretch had been completed, citing low usage as the reason. The removal has sparked tension between construction crews and cycling advocates, resulting in the arrest of four individuals for mischief. Michael Longfield, executive director of Cycle Toronto, expressed concern about the unease between protesters and police but noted an optimistic mood among participants. Advocacy groups have sought a Supreme Court ruling to challenge Premier Doug Ford's plans, appealing an Ontario Court of Appeal decision that permitted the removal of protected bike lanes. Longfield emphasized that while the province has removed one kilometre of lanes, the community remains committed to defending the remaining 18 kilometres. Protesters wore Halloween costumes and carried signs such as 'Bike Lanes Save Lives,' with volunteers distributing candy. Oda Al-anizi, a disability rights advocate who uses an e-bike attachment for his wheelchair, highlighted the importance of bike lanes for people with mobility issues, stating they provide safety and accessibility. He noted that drivers often fail to see people in low-profile vehicles, making dedicated bike lanes essential for his daily mobility. The protest coincided with Toronto's municipal election, where cycling infrastructure became a key issue, leading to the re-election of Mayor Olivia Chow, who has shown strong support for cycling initiatives. Despite government claims that removing lanes will ease traffic congestion, advocates argue that bike lanes improve safety and accessibility for all residents, particularly those with disabilities. The cycling community remains hopeful that continued advocacy will influence the government's stance on bike lane preservation.
