This fourth-century Roman glass bottle was found in a grave at Butt Road cemetery in Colchester.

Similar bottles were discovered in nearby burials that may have belonged to the same family.

The Beast of Binchester. Originally it would have been buried underground.
I think it’s a cat, perhaps a guardian spirit, on patrol for nearly 2000 years.

Binchester - Vinovia or Vinovium was a #Roman fort and vicus situated on the banks of the River Wear in County #Durham. Built around 79CE to guard the river crossing and main road that connected York, Hadrian’s Wall and borderlands.

Just out of the bag - this chunky sestertius of #MarcusAurelius, showing Aurelius standing between four standards. No wonder some early modern scholars thought these beautiful coins were medals rather than money. Rome, c. AD 164-65; excavated at the fort at #Binchester. #RomanBritain #FindsFriday

Escomb Saxon Church: one of the oldest and most complete Anglo-Saxon churches in the United Kingdom. Built around 670-675 AD, with heavy masonry salvaged from the nearby Roman cavalry fort at Binchester.
