Escomb Saxon Church: one of the oldest and most complete Anglo-Saxon churches in the United Kingdom. Built around 670-675 AD, with heavy masonry salvaged from the nearby Roman cavalry fort at Binchester.

A retired military architect named Eltaominus dedicated the altar to Fortuna Redux. She was the Roman goddess linked with safe returns from travel. Eltaominus had served with the Ala Vettonum cavalry unit based at Binchester.

Wonderful news: I was part of a campaign which publicised the plight of Binchester when the Church Commissioners tried to sell it off piecemeal in 2014
