Mid-September a new #BioSmoke campaign in Spain kicked off 🇪🇸. Julia Olbrich collected pyrophyte leaf samples, while Kai Weber (@kai-jwd.bsky.social) ran vegetation surveys and drone-based LiDAR & hyperspectral imaging in a region with high wildfire risk near Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha).

Ein starkes Indiz für die #PyroCb- #Feuerwolken der #Waldbrände bei #Bordeaux sind die ungewöhnlich hohen #Rauchschichten. Der #Rauch befindet sich größtenteils in Höhen zwischen 3 und 7km Höhe, aber vereinzelt auch bei rund 11km, was „normaler“ #Waldbrand - #Rauch aus Europa sonst nicht erreicht.

A strong indication that the #wildfires near #Bordeaux have indeed produced #PyroCb #fireclouds is the unusually high of the #smoke layers. The #smoke is in #Leipzig mostly at 3 and 7 km, but some also at ca. 11 km (@ 21 UTC) – a height that ‘normal’ #firesmoke from #Europe does not usually reach.

A layer of smoke at an altitude of 11 km above Leipzig during the night of 29 July to 30 July 26. The coloured layers in identify the smoke layers by showing the intensity of fluorescence backscattering (number of photons counted), which is particularly strong in smoke particles. The more fluorescent smoke particles there are, the more intense the red colour becomes. Source: Benedikt Gast, TROPOS Back-trajectories for 28 July indicate that the air masses in which the smoke layers were detected were over the forest fire area near Bordeaux the previous night (approximately 15 hours earlier, i.e., 08:00 CEST) and near fires in central Spain approximately 24 hours earlier. It therefore stands to reason that the smoke particles measured by the lidar originate from these fires in France and/or Spain. What is unusual here is the high altitude of the smoke layers, at 10–11 km near the tropopause. Die farbigen Schichten identifizieren die Rauchschichten, indem sie die Intensität der Fluoreszenzrückstreuung (Anzahl der gezählten Photonen) anzeigen, welche bei Rauchpartikeln besonders stark ist. Dadurch ist die Rauchschicht in 11km Höhe über Leipzig in der Nacht vom 29.7. zum 30.7.26 deutlich zu sehen. Quelle: Benedikt Gast, TROPOS Rückwärtstrajektorien (für den 28. Juli dargestellt) zeigen, dass die Luftmassen, in denen die Rauchschichten detektiert wurden, in der vorhergehenden Nacht (ca. 15 Stunden zuvor, also 03:00 Uhr MESZ) über dem Waldbrandgebiet bei Bordeaux waren. Somit liegt nahe, dass die mit dem Lidar gemessenen Rauchpartikel von diesen Bränden in Frankreich stammen. Ungewöhnlich ist dabei die große Höhe der Rauchschichten von 10-11 km nahe der Tropopause.
