NIH is obligated to make data and novel products being developed for civilian healthcare available for transfer to the Department of War to support military biodefence work.

(It also misspells NIAID at the very top, calling it the "National Institute for Allergic and Infectious Diseases")

The agency is pivoting. NIH director Jayanta Bhattacharya outlined a new vision that moves away from pandemic preparedness, basic immunology, HIV/AIDS, and biodefence. Bhattacharya specifically referred to those subjects as Fauci's legacy.

The UK government has committed GBP 580 million to building a state-of-the-art biodefence lab at Porton Down. Official announcements have been scant on detail, other than noting that the new lab will form part of ‘Project Andromeda’. @dankaszeta.bsky.social reports.

In case you were wondering if grant making is political or merit based.

*Note, CREID had nothing to do with "biodefence" - it was a network focused on emerging infectious diseases and the threats they pose.

Why is NIH doing this?

A senior official told Nature: “When the public hears that NIAID funds biodefence, they think we’re developing bioweapons, and we’re trying to get out of that business.

We’re trying to get research that’s more Department of War-related back to Department of War.”

If you are ever feeling inclined to believe that NIH Director Bhattacharya has any core scientific beliefs, remember this...

He criticized and eliminated pandemic preparedness and biodefence from the NIAID strategic plan (without any process).

Transferring vast sums of money to a so-called "department of war" to do infectious-disease related work doesn't exactly assuage anyone's fears about bioweapons now does it?

Heroin addicts who take a line of coke off a toilet seat don't believe in pandemics. 'About one-third of the NIAID’s US$6.6-billion budget currently funds projects involving emerging infectious diseases and biodefence.'
Exclusive: Key US infectious-diseases centre to drop pandemic preparation
Staff members have been instructed to scrub this topic and ‘biodefense’ from the agency’s website.

Implementation remains unclear but this story tells you who is in charge and what they plan to do.

"Matthew Memoli has ordered more changes, including the review of the portfolio of grants funding biodefence and pandemic preparedness."

more changes -> cancellation of projects.

Senior NIH official: “When the public hears that NIAID funds biodefence, they think we’re developing bioweapons, and we’re trying to get out of that business”

Only conspiracy nuts think the NIH develops bioweapons, but: moving these projects to the "Dept of War" will seem to *confirm* their belief.
The agreement was signed out of the public view a month ago by Pentagon official Robert Kadlec and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, echoing my reporting.

It establishes a 10-year framework that officially runs through September 30, 2036.

The NIH will redirect research projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars to military biodefence programmes.

Funding will move out of the NIAID, the premier US infectious-disease research institute, to support defence initiatives.

Southeast Asia is home to rapidly expanding #biotech sectors, growing investments in #biodefence + high rates of emerging infectious diseases. These dynamics heightened risks of misperceptions and make the #transparency offered by #1972BWC CBMs especially valuable.

Why are we pretending this is even for Biodefence? It's the War Department now (JB even says that in his tweet). Warriors need weapons. They want our help to make Bioweapons.
