A few birds arriving in off the sea at Newton Pool this morning, mainly thrushes but a few finches and Skylarks too. Best of the bunch was a nice Mealy Redpoll, later trapped and ringed. Also lurking was a Cetti's Warbler, seen 4 here now, all in late Oct/Nov.

The Subalpine Warbler at Newton Pool on 4th October has been confirmed as Western Subalpine Warbler by DNA analysis (which gave a 100% match).

Big thanks to @docmartin2mc.bsky.social for his help with this one. 👍

A very late Willow Warbler was ringed yesterday - the latest Calf record since 1991. And after a 'blank year' last year, it's nice to have been catching some Fieldfares - such a gorgeous thrush 💙

Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) may not be everyone's favourites, but I absolutely love them! Look at his little mullet, what a rock star! Ringed and released in Greece.

So it's been a while (again), BlueSky. Making up for it with this stunner! Today at #Landsort Bird Obs 🇸🇪 we caught a ♂ Arctic/hoary #redpoll (Acanthis flammea exilipes). It may not have species status anymore, but it's goooooorgeous. Photos: Johan Rosén.

Whilst headlands in the SW were awash with passage migrants yesterday, SML, in its SW facing bay, had its quietest day of the year – one of the penalties of the location and settled calm weather. Just 12 new birds were trapped, the highlight being 3 Firecrest. #birdringing #ukbirding #ornithology

For the first time ever on the Calf...

Two Great Spotted Woodpecker were caught in a season! Amazingly, they were both caught on the same day! It provided a nice comparison between female and male as well.

This represents the 18th Calf record.
