Mary Seacole by Albert Charles Challen (British) - Oil on panel / 1869 - National Portrait Gallery (London, England) #womeninart #art #oilpainting #portraitofawoman #ArtText #NationalPortraitGallery #NPG #artwork #womensart #mother #AlbertCharlesChallen #Challen #BritishArtist #BlackBriton #HerStory
British artist Albert Charles Challen completed this portrait of the legendary Mary Seacole when she was around 65 years old in 1869. Seacole was born in Jamaica when black people in the Caribbean were forced to be slaves; however, she was a "free person" because her father James Grant was a white Scottish army officer. Mary’s Creole mother ran the respected lodging house Blundell Hall in Kingston and was a healer who taught Mary traditional Jamaican medicine. At 15, Mary traveled to England for a year and acquired knowledge about modern European medicine. After multiple England and Caribbean travels, Mary married Edwin Horatio Hamilton Seacole in 1836, but he passed away in 1844. In 1850, she nursed victims of the Kingston cholera epidemic and then in 1851 did the same in Panama for two years. In 1853, she returned to England and asked the British War Office to send her as a nurse for the Crimean War against Russia; however, they refused. So, she funded her own trip and established the British Hotel to provide a place of respite for sick and recovering soldiers. Soon, Mary was as well-known in Britain as Florence Nightingale whose famous military hospital was situated hundreds of miles from the frontline while Mary’s hotel near Balaclava was much closer to the fighting. Mary was able to visit the battlefield, sometimes under fire, to nurse the wounded soldiers who called her "Mother Seacole." When the war ended, Mary went back to Britain with very little money. Soldiers wrote letters to newspapers, praising what she had done. The Times War Correspondent, Sir William H Russell, wrote of Mary in 1857: “I trust that England will not forget one who nursed her sick, who sought out her wounded to aid and succor them, and who performed the last offices for some of her illustrious dead.” In 1857, over 80,000 people attended a 4-night fund-raising gala held for her. Soon, her autobiography, "The Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands" became a bestseller.
