I've belatedly read the Economist piece on Brixton as a symbol of "de-gentrification" & I don't 100% agree. Brixton is by no means unique, even in S London, in visible signs of a fraying urban & social fabric. I'm also not convinced the Zone of Chaos near the tube is notably more feral than before.

It sounds as if Brixton has gone to the dogs since @susanrwright.bsky.social and I moved out on August 19.

Thats said, there are some excellent rental properties about to become available in Brixton Hill and no one should worry about paying premium prices to live in them.

The busiest bus stop in London is in Brixton and Europe's busiest bus corridor is Brixton Hill - Streatham and other areas south are so poorly connected people flood into Brixton for the tube (also why the Overgroundisation of Southern is long overdue)

Think the “it’s just Brixton” attitude from authorities is one reason it has got bad

The other slightly obvious point I forgot is that central Brixton always suffers in liveability/calmness terms by having a whooping great A road going down the middle of it. Always makes an area less civilised.

I've lived in Brixton for 25 years. Sure, it's gentrified, but it is still Brixton. In my experience the people who complain about gentrification are mainly white middle class folk.

Exactly. Whereas in Brixton the answer for who is responsible is usually a quick curt “not us!”

State has lost the capacity to care about relatively small stuff, which then becomes very big stuff
I would say broadly speaking the difference is just that Kings Cross has a lot more state capacity because central government/St Pancras Ltd/Eurostar pays for the policing around the station and Coal Drops Yard Inc or w/e it's called pays for the security around the station.

Frank Sinatra always introduced The Guns of Brixton as "that terrific song by the first class songwriting team of Strummer and Jones."
