#Borderization
Late-night hotel reading, this novel had been sitting in my shelf for a while, truly gorgeous and original, ultimately a novel against borderization loaded with bold literary choices. Really enjoyed it.

Grave human rights violations against the small remaining ethnic Georgian population are widespread, as are the illegal processes of "borderization," along with frequent abductions and killings.

* the Georgian authorities also shared they recorded eleven cases of 'borderization' activities along the occupation line - with increasing frequency since November.

This seems to indicate that after a relatively quiet period this picks up again.

Meanwhile the ground moves one way. 628 xiaokang (小康) border villages across 21 #Tibet border counties, roughly 30bn yuan, dual-use by design, & filling with residents. Reopening a trade pass is reversible in an afternoon. A settled village is not. #borderization www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Gaëlle Le Pavic and I have researched geopolitical views in Georgia's communities affected by territorial conflicts and borderization. But we did it separately in our PhD and postdoc projects. Last year we joined forces and the result is this new publication:

Vernacular geopolitical orientations in Georgia’s contested border regions
This article examines how Georgian citizens living near contested borders with Abkhazia and South Ossetia perceive the European Union (EU) and Russia. While Georgia's EU integration is often framed...

IMO each of these is v unlikely bc the risk of escalation to full war w NATO would be v high. A bit less unlikely is some kind of “borderization” op in Svalbard (mostly demilitarized) or Aland Islands (fully demilitarized). The other three wld mean instant kinetic engagement w NATO forces.
🧵 Atlantic Council: Russia could test NATO through a limited attack. The main goal would not be territory, but testing whether NATO responds quickly and collectively.

Five scenarios are outlined.

1) a push through Lithuania to connect Kaliningrad with Belarus and cut off the Baltics;

This is a point that Mbembe makes well. Borders are not simply infrastructure for blocking off of space, but a process ("borderization") for segmenting and evaluating populations of life.

Indigenous peoples entered these countries no differently from immigrants. When they were making up their citizenship criteria we were excluded for well over a hundred years. We were brought into the state and we can be pushed back out again.
I do not want to see another ignorant post about how the end of birthright citizenship means only Native people are citizens. This administration's attack on birthright citizenship STARTED by citing the unlawful notion that Tribal Citizens should not have US citizenship. edt

Maybe not that provocative (?) but perhaps an island up north (Svalbard?) or a “borderization” move (see eg Georgia and S Ossetia) vs Estonia. Or maybe smthg dramatic on the hybrid front (eg cyber attack/undersea cables). Lots of possibilities w various escalation risks/implications.
Recently there was a post here quoting warnings that Putin may seize an island in the Baltic to try to precipitate such a “moment” for NATO - is that the sort of crisis you would expect?
