Earth's 'foreshock': the swirling plasma ahead of the bowshock where the solar wind slams into our magnetosphere.

you know what my ship names are boring

I need to embrace tradition with the RWBY style of ship naming

It'll be #SilverBullet and #BowShock from now, y'all know which ship is which

(scrapped) a lone shot pierced through and away from the bowshock while in uncontrolled descent, striking a supremely lucky hit of the fractaar in pursuit. this is one of few recorded instances of a kill on such an object.

...about how these things work.

A straightforward momentum-conserving bowshock setup (basically, the overall push from all that moving stuff) matches the rings' shapes, speeds, and even their masses spot on.

These ejection episodes happen every few decades or so, and the latest one...

A week ago I shot almost 300 images of 10 seconds each with my Celestron EdgeHD 9.25". After stacking with Siril and processing I got to this result. I processed the image to accentuate the bowshock around the star LL Ori.

In fact the bright part may have been caused by a bowshock, but from the stellar wind from the system before it exploded. Kepler’s supernova/sn1604 was the result of a runaway binary star with a white dwarf. The wind from the binary created the bowshock, now overtaken by the SN shock.

Toraki and Nikos' ship name outside of ffxiv is 'featherstorm' but I think 'bowshock' would be a cute and funny one for ffxiv lmao

You can ride the bowshock next to the bus, get wifi and a free mileage boost while still being able to see the road ahead.

Bowshocks are one of those cool features that appear across much of astrophysics—they're basically the curved shock waves that form when something supersonic plows into a slower medium, like the "wake" a speedboat leaves but in gas and plasma.

The classic everyday analogy is Earth's bowshock:

Mind-blowing, right?

Bowshocks driven by the pole-on molecular jet of outbursting protostar SVS 13 - Nature Astronomy
ALMA has captured exquisitely detailed images of bowshock shells in the outflow of an outbursting protostar. These provide important insights into the variable nature of the ejections from protostars,...

In this Hubble Space Telescope image, you can see the bowshock even better.

They'd inherit the creator's trajectory, and be pulled along behind it. Hmmm... these black holes would also have some kind of bowshock, and probably immense accretion disks burning around them, maybe forming stars directly around them as well.

...ght. The most striking feature is a horizontal jet 5.5 trillion kilometres long in the upper left frame. It is being blasted into space by a young star hidden in the tip of the pillar-like structure. A bowshock has formed near the tip of the jet.
