I've been skeptical of all these supposed "breakthroughs" that AI companies have been claiming with mathematics, in a way that I haven't been able to put my finger on before (mostly because I don't know my ass from my hand when it comes to math). This explains a lot.
In other words, in a world where mathematicians and mathematics are inseparable, every solution to a longstanding problem heralds an accompanying theoretical insight. Once we separate mathematics from mathematicians, we start to get solutions *without* insights.

I’m convinced one of the purposes of DOGE was to cripple governmental research to ensure that no major scientific breakthroughs could occur and supplant the tech bros status.

After all, they didn’t really build shit. They piggybacked off of scientific breakthroughs from our government.
Pentagon labs lost 14% of staff, the Energy Department over 1,000 scientists and technical workers, and biomedical researchers faced more than 2,000 delayed or cancelled grants.

Nice piece. I’ll go farther than @colesci.bsky.social and say the data my collaborators and I have collected argues the number of #breakthroughs has NOT declined over time. It’s been remarkably stable over 20 years 🧪
New, from me in @techpolicypress.bsky.social. Any attempt to understand the dynamics of innovation in the United States needs to look at the R&D ecosystem in total. Currently the government is focused on about 5% of the system while mostly ignoring much, much larger issues with lower public trust.

Fellow mathematicians described her solo triumph as a monumental feat of pure mental endurance and technical brilliance, proving that world-altering mathematical breakthroughs have no age limit.

🧪 Insightful article here. If the private sector has already been doing the lion's share of "research" activity since Apollo, how does it follow that the alleged slowdown in breakthroughs is because of inefficiencies and flaws in university research?

I don't need AI, I need a timemachine so I can get everything I want to get done in a day (art for myself, art for work, writing two different genres of text, and taking care of my family and social obligations, plus do some casual reading) done

Where's the real scientific breakthroughs? Come on!
