Brocolitia is one of 16 large forts on Hadrian's Wall. It housed a 500-strong auxiliary cohort from AD 130.

The sunken temple of Mithras is outside Brocolitia Roman Fort, Hadrian’s Wall. Mithras was a god from the eastern Roman Empire, popular among the military communities. A bull sacrifice was an important part of the rituals honouring the god.
