I lived in a straw-bale house for two weeks while house-sitting for a friend of a friend, the internal temperature remained fairly constant day & night, and it was completely off-grid with solar system and an underground bushfire bunker ... truly amazing house. 🤗😁😎
Building a huge wine warehouse with jumbo straw bales was half the cost of a conventionsl build.
Can you imagine how cheap it is to cool or heat?
And no it's not temporary, it's very resilient.

Check on your friends and family living in bushfire prone areas - they might appreciate your help preparing for the oncoming fire season.

There are early signs that the fire season in Victoria and Tasmania could be bad.

This seasonal outlook for rain (left) and temperature (right) over the next three months is not friendly. There is lots of time to pass until fire season down here - and things will shift! - but this is a bad start.

The design of the internet itself was predicated on survivability, routing around degraded infrastructure and being resilient to failure - precisely the conditions of a fast-moving bushfire.

What are the opportunities here for self-hosted, federated infrastructure?

An excellent piece by @ransos.bsky.social for @news.abc.net.au that examines the fragility of telecommunications infrastructure under bushfire conditions, ...

G'day

Today's walk at Wireless Hill Park (Yagan Mia) was the site of a 10.5 hectare/26 acre bushfire on 8 November 2025

The following link summarises the Noongar Six Seasons

“Asked if we’re better off than we were before Black Summer, Helen says: “I have very, very low confidence that we won’t find ourselves in exactly the situation that we find ourselves in every bushfire.”
Every bushfire destroys communications and infrastructure.

#AmateurRadio didn't even get a mention. Do a google search for Amateur Radio repeaters between Sydney and the boarder. What a joke this kind of reporting is. A vital service, that was used during the emergency, crickets. #auspol #bushfire #nswpol

The Black Summer bushfires cut people off from warnings, rescue and each other when mobile phones failed. How can we stay safe when telecommunications go dark?
One community's bushfire plan could be a 'gamechanger' in emergencies

Hold up. OpenAI agents wandered into Medicare and a NSW bushfire stash without asking. Now the company burns five hundred thousand bucks a day chewing fifty petabytes of its own crumbs. Sixty-six million human-years of reading. Over a hundred awkward emails. Safety testing, they said. day277.006

Nowra/Shoalhaven making the news. Bushfire resilience. I've never heard of these digital screens or seen one. Best bet here is never be down in a tiny village during extreme fire weather. And don't try to drive out. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Moving out of the city solved a lot of niggles like that for me. Not being exposed to concrete and brake dust, diesel soot, and other people's pathogens!
I bought an indoor air filter for the bushfire days and it helps with the grass pollen season.
It seemed worse during Covid episodes too?
