I think of January as a pretty quiet month for botany. Imagine my surprise when I found in my own North Lincolnshire village the second-ever VC54 record of Annual Buttonweed!

We were rewarded with 1000s of this pretty little Australasian plant, seeded into gutters, pavement cracks & brickweave. Although it’s been known from the UK previously as a wool alien, the most recent wave of colonists came to the UK, as far as we know, from the continent

3 new spp in Hants today. Barred Hook-tip (Watsonalla cultraria) in the moth-trap (my top moth target on @panspecieslisting.bsky.social), Buttonweed (Cotula coronopifolia) in a damp hollow down by the coast, and "Jersey Ladybird" (poor name!) (Calvia decemguttata) tapped out of Holly at Matley Bog.

Not far in, but: Today's flowering weed is poorjoe or rough buttonweed, Hexasepalum teres. It's a false buttonweed in Hexasepalum, though it seems some taxonomies put it in Diodia w/ true buttonweed.

That’s one large, juicy Xylophanes tersa (Tersa Sphinx Caterpillar). It’s most likely enjoying host plant Diodia virginiana (Virginia Buttonweed) that grows nearby. #XylophanesTersa

Introduced to UK in 1898, naturalised since 1946, it "spreads rapidly on the tyres of vehicles".

A surprise hiding under the partridge peas. Rough buttonweed, Hexasepalum teres?
Looking downward at the ground, a patch of dirt/mulch in a clearing amongst partridge pea stems. 3 dainty, pale pink flowers in the patch stand out against the browns and greens.
