Byōdō-in's (平等院) Hōō-dō (鳳凰堂 'Phoenix Hall') was completed in 1053. Once completely surrounded by Aji-ga-ike pond, the stretch of water helped protect the building from fires in 1336 and 1483 that completely destroyed the rest of the temple.

A vertical color woodblock print titled A Section of the Byodo Temple at Uji (1921) by the Shin-hanga master Kawase Hasui depicts a contemplative and highly structured view of the historic Byōdō-in temple complex. From his early series “Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series,” the print showcases Hasui's mastery in capturing architectural geometry balanced by the fluid textures of nature. The composition is divided horizontally into two primary zones: the architectural facade of the temple wing stretching across the upper half, and its watery reflection occupying the lower half. The temple corridor sits on a low, grassy earthen bank rendered in warm ochre and moss-green tones. The building itself features classic Heian-period architectural elements, with dark exposed timber framing contrasted against stark white plastered walls. A series of distinctive windows punctuates the facade, including wide, dark gridded lattices (renjimado) in the center and elegant, bell-shaped scholar's windows (katōmado) flanking the sides. A small open tunnel gateway beneath the center of the structure allows a narrow channel of water to pass through. The lower half of the frame is dominated by the expansive Aji-ike pond. The water is printed in a deep teal and turquoise hue, with delicate, horizontal ripples carved into the blocks to simulate a gently moving surface. The surface acts as a mirror, casting a elongated, dark reflection of the building’s timber frame, windows, and heavy gabled roof into a shimmering vertical column that stretches toward the bottom edge. Framing the temple architecture are several natural elements. On the left, a couple of slender, leafless deciduous trees sprout from the bank, while a small, clipped green shrub stands on the right. Looming behind the dark tiled roof line, dense, silhouetted crowns of ancient pine trees rise against a narrow band of bright blue sky, indicating a clear day.

Visited Byōdō-ji (Inaba-dō) Temple in Kyoto on Sunday, as part of my work trip the past couple of days. Photographed the Audi W8 E-Tron there. And picked up a few omamori. This one for me. The magical rabbit. Imbuing me with magical powers. Happy to report that it’s already working.

For a long time it was believed that crape myrtles had been imported to Japan from the mainland some time in the Edo period, but recently pollen was discovered in the pond bed at Byōdō-in (平等院) that confirmed trees were growing here before the temple (completed in 1052)!😮
