CAHMS: Can't Actually Help Mate, Sorry
March 20, 2025 at 7:51 AM
28/ long waiting list. (This certainly isn't what I experienced with CAHMS a decade ago, with the CAHMS waiting list being similar to the GIDS one at the time and GIDS not providing therapy/counselling, but my experiences are not universal and things may have changed over the years.)

The HSE currently has a 30% vacancy rate for psychiatry posts. The NGS would need to poach psychiatrists from cahms, addiction services & mental health services that are already critically understaffed

I shouldn't ever hear about CAHMS, or Tusla, or SNA cuts, or neglected children in this country, apparently one of the richest in the world, because these should be solved issues, or issues we throw every fucking resource imaginable at.

Anecdotal, but I affirmed my kid pre-puberty, once it became clear to me she was who she said she was. When we finally reached CAHMs they turned us away and wouldn't refer us on to GIDs because she was too mentally healthy for therapy so there was "nothing" they could do for us. :/

My mum in the later stages of her terminal illness didn't even qualify even with docs and nurses yelling down the phone at them because of the absolute arbitrary horse shit reasons. The entire system was and continues to be fucked. Don't even get me started on CAHMS.

I understand why people assume be must be a mental health issue and I don’t begrudge anyone not following the details at sentencing, but this was the single biggest misconception in replies to my newsletter. Yes, CAHMS needs more money. No that is not *at all* relevant to this case.

CAHMS and the defunding of them & Social Services is at the root of this.

I'm not saying he wouldn't still have issues, he clearly would, but I am saying the Tories have blood on their hands.

3 referrals to Prevent, because what else could anyone do?

CAHMS should have been able to do far more.
January 23, 2025 at 9:01 PM
I’m so sorry. Yes, we need full in-school counselling services and CAHMS services available through referral from them, no waiting time.
March 21, 2025 at 9:44 AM
Should be obvious to anyone that of course the vast, vast majority of children that come into contact with children's services or CAHMS are much more likely to be at risk than to be a risk, and that modal case will shape the culture no matter what the politicians say and do.

27/ 19:45 Cass claims there's weak evidence for use of psychological interventions in gender dysphoria. She proceeds to claim that trans youths are being excluded from CAHMS and all the responsibility for treating depression and anxiety put on GIDS, something that takes years due to the obscenely

On CAHMS waiting lists, Mary Butler said "... I will not rest until we get there"

This is such condescending waffle.

The job is to plan, make decisions, solve problems, & equip services with what they need to deliver adequite provision.

You're not taking the ring to fucking Mordor.

“I am not happy. My team knows I am not happy. My department knows I am not happy. Bernard Gloster knows I am not happy,”

How about you do something about it Minister, instead of blaming HSE & calling neurodivergence a trend.

Fund better services, FFS.

Surge in child ADHD diagnoses sees two HSE areas contain half of spiralling waiting lists
Mary Butler said two HSE areas were now bearing 50 per cent of the national waiting list

No one who supports trans or questioning youth is against them having support with mental health, neurodivergence etc. Do you know how bad provision is for young people? CAHMS is at collapsing point. THIS should be what people bang a drum about, not denying drugs to a tiny no of kids who need them.

Daughter medicated by CAHMS when she needed support to understand her neuro diversity.

It took her 10 years to recover but she now leads an independent professional life in London.

One very proud dad.

CAHMS. Now there is a real scandal. Times won't write about that tho.
January 24, 2026 at 10:43 AM
And also it’s not like he’s been totally hermitic his entire life
He’s had brushes with police, cahms and prevent - so why would they have faith in getting help

Was reminded of the recurring nightmares I had, horrible bloody ones, my CAHMS "therapist" told me it was because I was stressed about exams (not being SAd, my father abandoning me, or him downplaying said SA, but "exams" lol)

I know Simard is currently (and appropriately) winning the Death Becomes Her sound bite-athon but truly. Can we take a second for Hilty and “The ROMS, the COMS, the rahm-cahms, the Dramas. THE DRA-MUH-DEEEEEES”??

A lot of TD's couldn't give a fuck about Women's health, most don't seem to give much of a fuck about our health full stop. Scoliosis, CAHMs, A&E and so on.

And Fuck SF for abstaining.
May 13, 2026 at 7:53 PM
Was remarking the other day, I still think there is a CAHMs crisis in the making which we're nowhere near in a position to deal with.

Trying to help and support families, children, friends when there is no support behind you is exhausting.

Yesterday included a battle with social services, lack of SEND support, a broken healthcare system, no CAHMS support.

Schools are trying, but it is a tough gig right now.
December 10, 2024 at 8:15 AM
The state of CAHMS is a disgrace in general. Much more funding needed.
January 24, 2025 at 3:41 PM
Always appalled at how every version of government has foisted attendance onto schools.

Can’t fix that, mates, without fixing family services and support, CAHMS, cost of living, cost of transport…
June 25, 2026 at 7:32 AM
For most services this is good and sensible. Most services are not significantly more restrictive for children, trans health is pretty unique there. This is about not dumping kids with serious mental health issues out of CAHMS with no support lined up and no prep for functioning in adult services.
April 9, 2026 at 12:01 PM
I am not optimistic. Kids still have access to phones all the rest of the time.

Invest in better youth programs, support youth charities, invest in CAHMS & stop eduction simply being an exam factory.

Kids & parents / carers, need support and alternatives to social media not ineffective schemes.
