They already fine Netflix over Canadian content law, Meta over news law, anyone involved in email spam with CANSPAM law

I sometimes make my students look at the legislative history for the CANSPAM act which is full of the spurious justifications businesses like to make for why we shouldn't be able to delete their email from our lives.

If there was still a functioning federal government, I’d say report them for CANSPAM violations and they could get fined up to $40k plus per non-compliant email, but uh… well, you know *waves vaguely at the state of the federal government*

I can't remeber if CANSPAM rules apply in the uk, but in many countries you need to dual confirm.

It’s mainly that it’s a 20+ year old law that was badly compromised at the time and assumed that email rather than texts (which were expensive to leverage in 2003) would be the dominant vector for spam.
Email has fared better, mostly because providers intervene aggressively for non-CANSPAM reasons.
