Atmonia scales green ammonia with single-step electrochemical process
Ammonia is essential to modern agriculture, but making it via the traditional Haber-Bosch process is carbon-intensive and typically requires enormous industrial plants. So, what’s the alternative? Iceland-based Atmonia has spent the past decade developing patented catalysts for a single-step electrochemical process that eliminates the need to first produce and store hydrogen. The company is now focused on cutting energy demand and scaling its technology toward a 40-foot containerized system producing around 150 tons of ammonia a year. AgFunderNews (AFN) caught up with cofounder and CEO Helga Dögg Flosadóttir (HDF) at the World Agri-Tech innovation summit in London to discuss the technical hurdles to scale-up, the economics of decentralized ammonia production, and how Atmonia has funded its tech. AFN: How is Atmonia making green ammonia? HDF: We founded Atmonia in 2016, so we’ve been around for a decade. For a great part of that time, we’ve been engineering and working on developing a catalyst that can produce ammonia in an aqueous electrochemical cell [at ambient temperature and pressure]. This is single-step ammonia production from nitrogen and water so we do not need to produce or store any hydrogen. We also do not need two different systems and have an equilibrium between...

NOX Raises €3 Million to Connect Home Clean Energy Devices to the Grid
Residential energy management software startup NOX Energy announced that it has raised €3 million (USD$3.4 million) in a seed funding round, with proceeds aimed at scaling the company’s smart energy management software connecting home clean energy devices to the grid across Europe. Founded in 2024 by CEO Axelle Moortgat and COO Louis Clermont, Belgium-based NOX develops a smart energy management platform that connects home energy assets, including heat pumps, solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles, to energy markets, optimizing the operation of the devices, based on factors such as electricity prices, weather forecasts and grid conditions. Over the past year, the company has connected more than 10,000 energy devices and signed customers including Eneco and Frank Energie. The new capital will be used to expand outside of Belgium and the Netherlands into new European markets, the company said, and it will focus on embedding its solution directly into manufacturers’ own apps, enabling optimization to become a built-in feature, instead of asking consumers to adopt a new energy-management app or install new hardware. Axelle Moortgat, co-founder and CEO of NOX, said: “Millions of homes already have a heat pump, battery or solar panels connected to their manufacturer’s app. Energy suppliers and...

NZ Clean Energy and Mercury NZ Ltd enter long-term renewable partnership
The agreement represents a significant partnership between one of New Zealand's leading electricity generators and retailers and an independent renewable energy developer, supporting the delivery of new renewable generation capacity and strengthening the country’s long-term energy security. Located near Masterton in the Wairarapa region, the Masterton solar and energy storage project is a 118 MW development designed to generate approximately 190 GWh of renewable electricity annually – the equivalent needed to power about 27 000 homes (more than all the homes in the Wairarapa). Once operational, the project will contribute meaningful new renewable generation to New Zealand’s electricity system, helping meet growing demand while supporting the transition to a lower-emissions economy. The project has been carefully planned to integrate renewable energy generation with existing farming activities, allowing sheep grazing to continue across the site throughout its operational life. In addition to supporting New Zealand’s clean energy ambitions, the development is expected to deliver tangible economic benefits to the Wairarapa region, including the creation of more than 100 jobs during the construction phase. NZCE has commenced early works on site and is now in the final stages of selecting the contractor to complete the build. Following contractor appointment, mobilisation and installation...

Finally: Rose-Tinted Solar Panels Could Let Crops And Electricity Share The Same Land
Plants are the original solar panels, and they're very good at converting light into energy – red and blue light, that is. But what if a solar panel could co-exist with plants, capturing the light that they aren't using while allowing those red and blue wavelengths through? That's what a team led by Silvia Ma Lu of Mälardalen University in Sweden has tested in a new study, using semi-transparent, rose-tinted solar panels that let specific wavelengths of light through to plants growing below, while also capturing solar energy for electricity. They've presented their prototype in the scientific journal Cell Reports Physical Science. "The basic concept is quite straightforward," Ma Lu says. "The solar panels use part of the incoming sunlight to generate renewable electricity while allowing part of the light to pass through to the crops growing underneath." Perhaps we could be harvesting sunlight more efficiently by allocating different portions of the solar spectrum to crop growth and electricity generation, she says. The magenta panels tested in this study, however, are more like a prototype than the final product. Their magenta color filters light in the green spectrum, but at present, that green light energy is not actually captured by...

Albania to add battery storage to upcoming solar power auction
Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of Albania Enea Karakaçi said the next photovoltaic auction would be held in early 2027 at the latest. He revealed that the competitive bidding process would include battery storage. Solar power has climbed from almost zero to 11% of Albania’s annual electricity production within three or four years, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of Albania Enea Karakaçi asserted. He visited the Erseka (Ersekë) area in the country’s southeast and two PV units of 40 MW in combined capacity. The new electricity law, adopted in late June, facilitated the inclusion of battery energy storage systems (BESS) into renewable energy projects, the minister noted. ALPEX enabled access to free market for power producers Producers can trade their electricity in the free market, at the Albanian Energy Exchange (ALPEX), Karakaçi pointed out. They can also choose between several energy products, he added. According to the minister, the government is preparing, in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, for another solar power auction. He expects it late this year or in early 2027. Karakaçi stressed that the competitive bidding process would, for the first time, include battery storage. It is a way to bridge the period...

Ford backs a big new solar farm for its Michigan factories
Detroit-based energy company DTE Energy has completed construction of a 100-megawatt (MW) solar farm near Coldwater, Michigan, that will help Ford power its home-state factories with cleaner electricity. Ford is funding the $194 million Cold Creek Solar Park through its enrollment in DTE’s voluntary renewable energy program, CleanVision MIGreenPower. Cold Creek generates enough power for the equivalent of roughly 23,000–25,000 households in Michigan. Construction began in April 2025. Cold Creek is the first of several DTE projects being built to support Ford’s renewable electricity commitment in Michigan. Ford agreed in 2022 to purchase up to 650 MW of renewable energy through MIGreenPower. The program lets households and businesses match their electricity use with renewable power generated in Michigan, while helping fund new wind and solar projects. Advertisement - scroll for more content For Ford, the goal is to assemble every vehicle it makes in Michigan with the equivalent of 100% carbon-free electricity by the end of 2027, according to DTE’s latest announcement. That deadline has moved: When Ford and DTE announced the agreement in August 2022, they set a 2025 target. The new announcement doesn’t explain the change. The solar buildout also brings benefits beyond Ford’s factories. DTE says projects...
