1920s juries were not taken to crime scenes and so the murder scene of Emily Kaye in an Eastbourne bungalow was brought to them in 1924 thanks to the craft skills of PC Edward Er Onan Shelah (1890-1962) at Brixton Police Station. #CM150 #Museum30 #making #truecrime

#OnThisDay 115 years ago Ch Insp Walter Dew boarded the SS Montrose on its arrival in Canada & arrested the suspected murderer of Cora Crippen, the first-ever arrest thanks to a wireless message. This page is on display in our #CM150 exhibition at Sidcup until April 2026. Hornung had been a journalist in Whitechapel during the murders there and later wrote the Raffles novels on a gentleman thief, whereas Jerome (best-known for 'Three Men in a Boat') probably got far less inspiration from the collection ...

#OnThisDay in 1942 the body of pharmacist Evelyn Margaret Hamilton was found in an air-raid shelter in Marylebone, robbed by a left-handed assailant. She was the first of 4 murder victims in the so-called Blackout Ripper case (featured in our #CM150 exhibition). #OTD #truecrime

At 3 am #OnThisDay in 1963 a London gang used a fake signal in Buckinghamshire to stop the London-bound mail train in what became known as the Great Train Robbery. Fingerprint evidence from the gang's hideout features in our #CM150 exhibition (September tickets now available). #OTD #truecrime

Our immediate #ArchiveFuture is our next exhibition, opening in July this year and lasting a year. It will mark 125 years of the Met's Fingerprint Department and of Met forensics more widely, with some cases like the Stratton brothers kept from #CM150 but also new ones. #Archive30 #CM150 #EYAcrime
Edwardian photograph with a handwritten caption 'Mr Farrow's cash box.'. It shows a cash box, with an arrow pointing from the inscription 'Thumb-mark' to part of its cash tray. This was found at the murder scene of Thomas Farrow, 71, who lived over and ran Chapman's Oil and Colour Shop at 34 Deptford High Street. He came downstairs in the early hours of 27 March 1905 and interrupted burglars Alfred and Albert Stratton. They murdered him and assaulted his wife Ann, 65, so severely that she died in hospital four days later. The thumb mark one of the Stratton brothers left on this cash tray in the shop convicted them both of the double murder, the UK's first murder conviction to hinge on fingerprint evidence. Items from the case are in our current exhibition and will probably also appear in Forensics 125.

Annie Parker #stitch ed this sampler (now on show in our #CM150 exhibition) using her own hair as thread and gave it to the Rev John Horsley, chaplain to Clerkenwell Prison. In 1884 he gave it to our collection - Parker herself died the following year of TB aged only 35. #Museum30 #womensart

The #eyes definitely have it in this Photo-Fit kit from our collection. Invented by Jacques Penry, it replaced the American Identikit in 1970 and was itself replaced by E-FIT in 1988. This one is on the object shortlist for our #Forensics125 exhibition next year - stay tuned! #CM150 #Museum30

As this visitor book shows, the Crime Museum has been used to train Met, national and international officers right from the start. Initially celebrities such as the composer Arthur Sullivan were allowed in, but for most of its history it has been a private collection. #CM150 #OTD #OnThisDay
