The #eyes definitely have it in this Photo-Fit kit from our collection. Invented by Jacques Penry, it replaced the American Identikit in 1970 and was itself replaced by E-FIT in 1988. This one is on the object shortlist for our #Forensics125 exhibition next year - stay tuned! #CM150 #Museum30

The 'Acid Bath Murderer' is one of the cases in our new exhibition, opening on 8 September. He assumed this convention would mean he avoid a murder conviction, but pathologist Keith Simpson was able to find remains of his victims. #Forensics125 #forensics #TrueCrime #pathology #museums

#OnThisDay 125 years ago Assistant Commissioner Edward Henry set up the Met's Fingerprint Department. Its system was based on the work of Hem Chandra Bose and Qazi Azizul Haque in the Bengal Police, of which Henry had been the head. Our #Forensics125 show in September will mark the anniversary. #OTD

Our large collection of sketches by Liverpudlian William Hartley are a shoe-in for #ArchivesForJustice, showing not only Met officers witnessing in court, but barristers, defendants, the public, and just occasionally (as here) a photo of a victim worked up into a sketch. #IAW2026 #VAWG #Forensics125
A head-and-shoulders pencil sketch of a young white woman in a neck-length dress and lace or embroidered collar, done up with a brooch. She wears her long hair in a top-knot or bun. Monogram 'WH' at bottom. She is Maud Eliza Marsh, a groom's daughter born in Croydon on 17 February 1883 and baptised at St John's Church in the town ten days later. On the night of the 1901 census she was a live-in housemaid to a widow and her builder's-merchant husband, but by August that year she was out of a job. She answered an advert for a barmaid at the Monument pub on Union Street in Southwark. It had been placed by Seweryn Antonowicz Kłosowski (going by the name George Chapman), who deceived her into a bigamous marriage, physically abused her and finally murdered her with tartar emetic (antimony potassium tartrate). She was the last of three women who he had treated and killed in this way. Her death on 22 October 1902 led to a coroner's inquest before her burial at Croydon Cemetery on 5 November, the procession beginning at an undertaker's on Southwark Bridge Road at 11 am. Many shops and homes nearby drew down their blinds as a mark of respect, but a crowd of onlookers tried to break into the cemetery to see the funeral. Witnesses at the murder trial included Inspectors George Godley and William Kemp and Detective Sergeant Arthur Neil. Though he was solely on trial for Marsh's death, the judge granted a request from the prosecution team to present evidence from the other two murders, citing the precedent of another Crime Museum poisoning case, that of Dr Cream eleven years earlier. In Hartley's own handwriting, the caption shows he made it 'From Photo' for the newspaper coverage of the trial. The defendant was found guilt and hanged at Wandsworth Prison on 7 April 1903 less than a month after the guilty verdict. The local council pulled down the Monument pub later in 1903 for "improvements", whilst Neil would go on to be the SIO on the 'Brides in the Bath' case in 1915.

Gunsmith Robert Churchill fired guns found in a Battersea garage at this section of pigskin (the closest animal skin in thickness to human skin) to find out which had been used to murder PC George Gutteridge in Essex in the early hours of 27 Sep 1927. #NationalPigDay #Forensics125 #CM150 #ballistics

#OnThisDay in 1949 John Haigh was found guilty of murder. He is sometimes known as the 'Acid Bath Murderer', though he in fact used barrels rather than bathtubs. His case is included in the counter-forensics section of our #Forensics125 exhibition, due to open in early September. #TrueCrime
