It seems morbidly timely, but Patrick Stewart was a staunch campaigner against VAWG. He said something like "Some people will only listen to things if an old white man says them, so I will use my voice as an old white man to support those who need it."

This is why he is such a huge loss. We can watch Star Trek TNG any time we want. But as a spokesperson for Refuge and against VAWG, his support for Amnesty, his advocacy for the LGBT community and many other worthwhile causes he is a huge loss.

I mostly agree with you. But a core feature of racism is that it can be perpetrated either wittingly or unwittingly. That way more people uphold it over time. A system of oppression does not require constant malice in order to oppress: see also paternalistic sexism that enables vawg.

Female police officers are far more likely to be assaulted than male ones in family-conflict situations, and if you took VAWG seriously you would recognise that this is part of the issue!

The thing I appreciated about him was he knew his privilege as a white man, and used that privileged platform to speak up. He called VAWG out for what it is, a ‘man issue’ that men need to step up and change.
