Happily capping complete sentences after colons. Thanks, CMOS18.

a copy editor's work is never done and this copy editor is still continually forgetting that CMOS18 says to capitalize the initial word after a colon if what follows is a complete sentence

as a protest I am not capitalizing any sentences here on bluesky

Translators of books! The Chicago Manual of Style now encourages publishers of translated books to include the name of the translator on the front cover in addition to the title page. Please inform your editors and publishers and cite section 1.79 in #CMOS18.

In citations, it's common to list the city of publication. CMOS18 is dropping that recommendation!

I finally had cause to bust out my hardbound CMOS18 today. Did I thumb through the pages to fill the air with new book aroma before honing in on my style quarry? Yes. I definitely did. #AMEditing

Not only is "utilize" most often used incorrectly, this try hard word gets flagged as AI writing! "Use" is enough, though definitions vary; for precision, say what you mean:

Depends on the style manual! Chicago says you can do it (CMOS18 8.155, 8.7)! So this is legit:

#Copyeditors: Just a general suggestion to check in with your publisher clients about #CMOS18! Some publishers are taking longer to move over to 18; some aren't adopting all of the changes. Decisions on the publisher's end take time; don't make assumptions and move to 18 w/o checking.

I just discovered another departure from the 17th edition #ChicagoManualOfStyle. Scholastic Grades! I'm glad this didn't come up for me after the 18th came out. Here's an example:

#CMOS17: I mostly got Cs and Bs in high school.

#CMOS18: In college, I got mostly A's.

True facts. #AmEditing 🎓

Preparing to brief my colleagues on the new changes in the 18th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. "There's just a few," I say, before all becomes yellow (as Coldplay foretold)

A new #CMOS18 means lots of links to update in courses, and some new takes to learn about copyediting choices and publishing "best practices." Here's a summary of changes to get you started with this big update!
