in which steven kotkin makes the provocative claim that the soviet regime came FAR closer to total collapse in 1941-42 than they would ever admit. parshall suggests this, going from the political execution numbers, but it's striking to see someone with such a view into the state archives agree.

The 2019 HK Pride Parade was smaller than prior years, because HKSARG chickened out and wouldn't permit an actual march. And maybe because everyone was a tad tired. The CUHK siege was just winding down. Of course, by the next morning, PolyU would be on fire. But that's a whole other thing.

I can assure you, even the most mild-mannered HKer after the CUHK siege and during the PolyU siege were cheering when the police armoured vehicle trying to ram itself into the university burst into flames
And fight they did. One iconic scene was of students setting ablaze a police armored vehicle - which costs taxpayers millions - with just a barrage of well-aimed Molotov cocktails. See the video from @hongkongfp.com. And note the cheering! Extremely cathartic!

For those wondering what’s going on here, this is office workers on the frontline facing off against the police in HK’s financial district in 2019 while the police was laying siege to CUHK. People in Zegna and Ferragamo, heels and suits, in umbrella shield formation in front of LV and Tiffany’s

"Ce sondage, réalisé en octobre 2019 par la CUHK, est étonnament toujours en ligne…

Il révélait que près de la moitié des personnes interrogées ne voyaient rien à redire aux actions des manifestants.

Seuls 1,6 % jugeaient inacceptable le fait de s’en prendre à la police."
Almost surprised that this polling from Oct 2019 by CUHK is still up... which showed that almost half the respondents saw nothing wrong with protesters’ actions. Only 1.6 percent found attacking the police unacceptable.

You can argue that line got blurred as the protests stretched out - if you’re riding motorcycles on old paths to CUHK to smuggle ‘goods’ to the students trapped in the siege or openly handling cocktail materials down Nathan Road, can you really argue you’re woleifei? I dunno
