#CWIS3
While long-term funding is key to the National Cycle Network's success, £104m over four years is £26m a year... the equivalent of upgrading a single A-road junction.

CWIS3, the government's four-year strategy mentioned '7,000 additional or improved [NCN] miles by 2030'...so £14,857 per mile?

More and more organisations recognise the power of active travel to help their businesses, improve patient health, reduce inequalities and make the country a better place. I'm proud to have coordinated this effort to bring those voices together around #CWIS3 with @adamtranter.bsky.social

Some thoughts, following today's cycling and walking investment strategy (CWIS3) launch, on the power of small things that together make something big

Would be nice to see fine words backed up with a more robust #CWIS3 and adequate funding for #ActiveTravel

The government has published CWIS3, its new cycling & walking strategy for England, during #BikeWeek

We welcome the stronger targets for short journeys and school travel, but the strategy still lacks a target to close the gender gap 👇

NEW: 50+ transport and health groups have written to the Government calling for clear targets in the upcoming Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3, as well as a comprehensive plan for a national active travel network, matching the long-term strategic focus given to roads.

Gov confirming (finally) that CWIS3 will follow on from the spending review. They are required to issue this statement as the deadline for CWIS3 being consulted on and put in place (ie start of April) has been missed.
Third cycling and walking investment strategy
The government will publish a third cycling and walking investment strategy setting out its long-term vision for active travel.

Roughly €55 per head (c.£46) of active travel funding in RoI for 2025.

Figure for England is roughly (and generously) £10 per head, with big differences between regions.

The UK government's new Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS3) is due this year. It should be aiming for c.£50 per head

A crucial win for investment in #cycling & #walking...

The last Gvt's funding cuts caused a glaring mismatch between the 2nd Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS2)'s "objectives" and the funding earmarked to achieve these. Let's hope there will now be no repeat in CWIS3, due later this year!

The government's Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy CWIS3 was announced yesterday.
It prioritises cheaper, safer, healthier journeys, and better connected new developments.

We welcome today’s #CWIS3 in making active travel safe, easy & accessible.

The ambition for 60% of children to walk or cycle to school by 2035, alongside a national safe routes network, is a significant step forward.

This is desperately sad and my thoughts are with friends & former colleagues impacted by these cuts

As Laura says, this is also no way to run the NCN. The CSR, and CWIS3, should set out a long term funding settlement for the NCN - this should reach £300m by the end of this parliament

Some of the Govt's CWIS3 is good. Some is "why?"

School streets and lots more crossings and safe routes to school is very good.

The acknowledgement for a much better & consistently signed network, cos in places it is crap and the NCN isn't as complete as it could be.

We won this case a year ago! And now? New flexibilities for cash strapped councils risk hollowing out the “dedicated funding” for cycling and walking.

This reversal comes as the Labour government is expected to publish its first ever Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS3) this week.

Yesterday our Campaigns & Policy Lead @benwheels.bsky.social attended the @appgcw.bsky.social to discuss #CWIS3 with @liliangreenwood.bsky.social. Pleased to hear about action on #PavementParking and mobility devices law, but nothing about the #ActivityTrap for #DisabledPeople.
Yesterday @appgcw.bsky.social meet w/ @liliangreenwood.bsky.social. Focus on #CWIS3.
✅reiterated commitmt 2 sort out Mobility Aid law
✅Pavemt Parking action
But nothin more 2 help #Disabled ppl be more physically active.
Need 2 end "activity trap": Disabled ppl fear losing bfits by getting active.

CWIS3 illustrates how the cost of car travel is crippling to low income families, and how liberating good active travel options can be.
June 13, 2026 at 8:09 AM
This! 👇 In my personal response to the CWIS3 consultation I recommended targets be added for a) a reduction in the total number of car trips per year and b) a reduction in total miles driven per year in England. Walking and cycling won't get easier or safer if we continue to drive more year on year.
Silver lining.

2. More school streets across the ward.

We all want to keep children safe.

And this aligns with the recently announced government aim that '60% of children aged 5 to 16 will usually walk or cycle to school by 2035'.
